Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 05, 2015 11:21 am I am planning on replacing the std Electric HWS supplied by the builder with a Sanden Heatpump. The guys that install these recommend the following Flow and Return system to be installed during build. Essentially from what I understand.. this will stop water wastage as the water from the taps is hot straight away. No waiting for the hot water to be hot. It's also suppose to save on heating.. somehow... Question is.. is this going to be a complicated alteration for the builder? Re: Hot Water Flow & Return? 2Apr 07, 2015 8:11 am In short - yes it will probably be a complicated alteration. Usually plumbers would not run a ring main in a house. A ring main is not necessary, but if done well it can save a decent amount of water and energy by eliminating "dead legs" (the time is takes for the water to run through the tap until it gets hot). Make sure the hot lines are all insulated though. It's especially handy if you have a kitchen, laundry or bathroom that is a long way away from your HWU. We commonly use hot water recirculating systems in non-residential (hospitals, aged care, etc) and also in large apartment buildings with a common hot water system. Have you considered solar HW? When you add up the cost of a heat pump HWU, ring main piping and insulated lines, I reckon solar would end up being more cost effective or not far off. It would certainly be more cost effective over a few years, especially in Qld. We have solar and the electric element pretty much does nothing 95% of the time. Just for experimentation I switched the element off for 2 weeks and we had steaming hot water the whole time.
