Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Apathy/Miserliness in Design 42Jun 24, 2008 4:27 pm Well I've actually enjoyed the debate.....which is what I thought the original post was intended to initiate. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Apathy/Miserliness in Design 44Jun 24, 2008 4:28 pm nzfiona I guess in some ways it makes me angry to see so much luxury in these houses we build when there is so much poverty and suffering so close to us. Just a bugbear of mine. Fiona Oh dear Fiona Sorry that everyone has taken this so personally, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I read it as the "royal we". Maybe I interpreted it as such because I also often feel this way. Sometimes I resent the expectations of society and wish that I could be happy living in our 12 sq house with 4 kids, It's certainly a lot more than I grew up with. (I don't know...maybe its that old catholic guilt or my old catholic MIL guilt trip). But I'm not happy and so we are buliding, but at times I do feel very, very guilty...can't help it. But then I also get angry about a lot of what happens in our society these days, I won't say what, as I know it will offend others and I would be attacked, so maybe that is Fiona's crime ....expressing an opinion contrary to others, which was a bit too close to the bone? Not all of us can put our point of veiw eloquently, or try to get across our message as gently as Yak Chat does for example. Live and let live...so why can't we all say 'Great, that's your opinion Fiona ...I disagree/agree...thanks for sharing'. In my time on this forum I've read many posts by people who are no longer a part of the forum. It seems they didn't share the majority view and have slowly disappeared...a shame because personally I think the greater number of opinions the better...we don't all want to build the exactly the same house now do we. Maybe we do all need a bit of a reality check sometimes, and let the real world invade our cosy little forum...no it's not comfortable to think about but it is the real world and something I personally try to think about and to teach my kids. Maybe we don't like it because it may make us seriously reconsider some of our choices and make us think about what we actually need rather than just what we want! Sorry, I've rambled on, but I'm just sorry that so many people have taken this so personally and that Fiona probably will not feel comfortable to take part in this forum any more. Now I shall go and hide in my bomb shelter 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Apathy/Miserliness in Design 45Jun 24, 2008 4:28 pm I suppose I thought that this thread was going to be taken as a personal attack. If I were feeling the way NZF was I think that I would have worded the original post differently - with more emphasis on the way I felt. The points about what other people were doing with their homes / luxuries / design features was not worded to show that it was solely the way OP felt but felt like it was a opinion on someone else's decisions.
So no I don't think that the majority needs to be in agreement at all times - that is not what forums are about. Lord knows people have posted here about many things that I am incorporating in my home - ie ensuites for all bedrooms / freestanding baths / 5m walk in pantry etc. But at the end of the day I am paying for it, I am living in it (well hopefully one day ) and it will never be sold as long as there is breathe in my body so I will choose and live with the consequences. Re: Apathy/Miserliness in Design 47Jun 24, 2008 4:34 pm hehe who knew that this thread would take on a life of its own....i've been watching it all day...hehe
i dont think i will weigh in on the issue at hand, considering there are already so many posts, and u get shot down for either side of the fence you sit on... but I will say one thing...i don't think NZF is coming back...... Re: Apathy/Miserliness in Design 50Jun 24, 2008 4:45 pm I would actually be horrified to think Fiona wouldn't come back. I did not agree with her wording but I think all of us understood the sentiment. I for one certainly don't want Fiona to stop coming to the forum. As I said before, at the very least this has been a productive and worthwhile debate.
To Fiona personally, if I misunderstood your initial post I apologise. I think a few of us took it as a direct statement about what we are doing. If you say that was not your intention, fine I accept that and I apologise if my comments have upset you. Yes but I'm born, breed, edumucated, and live in the the western suburbs so I'm allowed to say that.....I've got some tough education choices to make for my kids....one school produces really good pickpockets and the other carjackers....not sure which is the best vocation. But seriously there are some good schools in the west, bad schools in the east, and vice versa.....but's let's have that debate another day.... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Apathy/Miserliness in Design 57Jun 24, 2008 5:40 pm Guys, on a personal note (and not with my Site Admin cap on), i must say that i am quite sadened by the way the thread has progressed. I agree with Rellie and 'chelle, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I felt it did get personal and that really is a shame 'cause i know i'd get my back up if someone made it personal about me.
But that is what a forum is all about isn't it? A difference of opinions? A collective group of people with a common interest who share experiences, information and messages with each other, it doesn't mean we all need to agree. I was going to post this earlier in the day but delayed my response, so now in retrospect, i think i should have posted what i originally wrote, which was: Guys, there are a couple of ways of looking at this post. Initially you could take it personally and get upset, thinking that it is directed towards many of us. Or on the other hand you can understand that we are all individuals on this forum and are entitled to our own opinions. I understand where Fiona is coming from. And i also respect that everyone has the right to happiness, in whatever form they choose. I'm sure we all do our share for the needy but not all of us are saints. (feel free those that think you are saints in training, to raise your hands if you want???). I think we just need to respect that we all have different priorities and ideals in life and of course with the houses we choose to build for our families. Fiona is just expressing her views and i think there's nothing wrong with that. **************************************************************** I do sincerly hope that Fiona would not leave the forum as a result of this thread and the comments made. That would truely be a shame as it is always nice to have members that have a different opinion to others. Thats what makes each of us special.
