We would like to polish old concrete trough out the whole ground floor (about 100m2) in some areas there is old "stone carpet" layers. I would like your opinion would it all come out nice and even due to those stone carpet layers? Also couple of questions 1. Could we and how achieve lighter, whiter look? 2. Does it need to be sealed and re-sealed? 3. If need re-sealing how often? 4. Is it suitable for bathroom 5. How much $$ appox we are looking at? Many thanks in advance> Re: Polishing old concrete 2Mar 20, 2015 7:19 am A few photos of the areas in question would help a lot. I've never heard of "stone carpet layers". Do you mean some sort of aggregate or river stones set into the concrete for an effect ? Stewie Re: Polishing old concrete 3Mar 23, 2015 2:55 pm Yes, the flooring should be sealed before polishing because the solution may get into the pores of the flooring & cause staining. Sealing should be done just to make the floor surface even. Re-sealing & the pricing involved both depends on the condition of the concrete slab.
Re: Polishing old concrete 4Mar 27, 2015 6:17 pm Hi Stefi, From my research it is definitely possible to polish old concrete, the company that did our house (new build) have plenty of photos on their website/FB page showing old slabs/concrete polished up. There will be challenges though, depending on the condition of the existing concrete. If the slab is not very level you may get areas of high stone exposure and some of none. If you want full stone exposure then they may need to grind quite a bit off, which may create issues with floor levels between areas of different flooring types. I'm not sure if you could tint it lighter, ours was polished and then a penetrating sealant put on which should last a lifetime in domestic use, possibly require a re-seal in 10-15 years in higher traffic areas. After applying the sealant our concrete went a shade darker. The best idea would be to research good companies in your area and get them out to quote/inspect the job. Thanks Chippy,I do have one that I levered out. I'll try to find a brand name on the windows then do some searching.
