Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 22, 2008 1:36 pm For those with children, how do you decide who gets the biggest bedroom?
Do you go by age? Or swap after a certain period of time (and how long is a good time?) Just after a nice fair system - our bedrooms are quite definitley small, medium and large. WIsh I had made them the same size now thanks Simone Re: Who gets the biggest bedroom? 2Jun 22, 2008 1:47 pm Hi Donuts,
How old are your children? Old enough to give the choice? Or concept of picking room out of a hat? You might be surprised one of them may want to be further down the hallway or next to a bathroom. if these are the smaller rooms. Remember when you were a kid everything seemed so much bigger nesspop Why am I covered in feathers Re: Who gets the biggest bedroom? 3Jun 22, 2008 1:50 pm In the current rental we offered the largest bedroom to our youngest as he is still at the lego/toys everywhere stage. Our eldest spends more time on the computer than anything else and this is in the main living area so not a problem. Except our youngest has also decided the lounge room makes a great extra play area. (the current battle atm is to keep his toys from spreading out and taking over the house) eldest was more keen to have his room away from his brother than in the size of the room and as a consequence ended up with the smallest bedroom which is wedged in between the ensuite and the main bathroom. It is also right next to the kitchen. Not an ideal spot at all but he was determined not to be next to his brother. I've talked him around for the new build.
In the new house both the boys bedrooms are huge. Proper double bedroom size with the eldest getting the slightly bigger room. Well that's the way I'm pushing it but by the time we move in we'll see. They both seem happy enough with what I've suggested for now. I also had to consider the small activity room that is outside one of the bedrooms and how light from there would splash into their bedrooms. Since atm the eldest stays up later I've picked the bedroom diagonally opposite the activity room for his bedroom and the one that shares a wall with the activity room to be the youngster's bedroom. This way he can still leave his door open ( his preference) and get a small amount of filtered light but not have the activity room light shinning directly into his room. Sorry I'm not sure how old your kids are so this advice may not be appropriate. I don't have this problem, (just the one child) but maybe think about each child and who really spends more time in their room doing activities and give them the biggest? This may be where the oldest getting the biggest room idea comes from cos they are more likely to want privacy? I'm sort of thinking as I write. If it becomes a big issue maybe the ones that get the smaller rooms get a trade off in another room of the house (decorating, special area) or an area of the garden? Sometimes these things sort themselves out. When we were kids and moved my brother wanted the smallest room, so who knows. They may be able to sort it out themselves. If it gets really messy, flip a coin!! Hope this helps, Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Who gets the biggest bedroom? 5Jun 22, 2008 2:07 pm Our boys, 11yo and 4yo chose their own rooms from walking through the display home. All the kids rooms were about the same size anyway, the only thing is that BR2 has a WIR. So our 11yo selected the one with the WIR and the 4yo chose the one right at the back of the house with the std robe.
GIve them the choice but i would say age gets preference....but otherwise flip a coin??? Re: Who gets the biggest bedroom? 6Jun 22, 2008 2:34 pm Our secondary bedrooms are all exactly the same size and all have the same sized ensuites - the only thing that differentiates bedroom 2 from 3 & 4 is that it also has a walk in robe. So DD who is the eldest (almost 3yo) gets that one whilst DS (just turned 1) gets the one next door. We figure that girls always need more closet space then boys so the walk-in robe was made for a girl.
Now the next problem will be if we do have another baby as planned and it turns out to be a girl then what .............. maybe to be fair DS will get the walk-in robe and the girls will have ordinary robes. We will cross that bridge if and when it happens. Re: Who gets the biggest bedroom? 9Jun 22, 2008 4:54 pm Casa2 Rachelle I made sure that their rooms were identical in size, to the cm2! Me too! Our three year old loves to climb and explore in places that give parents heart attacks so he gets the window he is least likely to climb through. Then I probably should put bars on it too. Fi has moved in!! Re: Who gets the biggest bedroom? 11Jun 22, 2008 5:10 pm Our oldest son got the bedroom with the balcony. Our middle son got the bigger room with a large window. We made a big deal out of both rooms and always spoke about the positives so that each child thought he was getting the better deal. Our 3rd son got the room on the side but it will be decorated so beautifully he will think that he has the best room.
I suppose make something unique and special about each room that all kids should be happy. Mrs B Re: Who gets the biggest bedroom? 12Jun 22, 2008 5:19 pm Hi Simone,
Our 2 boys are 6 and 13 so with us it was the eldest gets the bigger room with the WIR. All of the bedrooms are huge anyway so they,ll have plenty of room for toys, electric guitars, drum kits etc. There is no display home for the house that we are building,so we sort of chose for them and then showed them on the plan and they both seem quite happy with the rooms we have chosen. We have just moved into another rental and our youngest actually wanted the smallest bedroom (bedrooms 2,3 & 4 are all different sizes) but we talked him into the bigger one that would actually fit all of his toys in Cheers Mel Building on 9 acres Re: Who gets the biggest bedroom? 13Jun 22, 2008 5:57 pm My 2 youngest kids got told what room they were gettting! The eldest (13)looked at the plan, and told us which one he wanted. The one he chose is not only the furtherest from us, but slightly bigger than the other two. He chose it because it is bigger, I may make him take the smaller one just to be mean!!!
Mr 10yr old, gets the one next to his brother, only because miss7 was upset that she will no longer sharing with mr 10, so we told her she can have the room closest to us, to make it less daunting for her. She has never had a room of her own before, so it will be a big step. In this house one room is slightly larger than a broom closest, and if you didnt want to share with miss7 you got that room. Needless to say mr13 chose not to share. Re: Who gets the biggest bedroom? 14Jun 22, 2008 6:38 pm Our bedrooms are slightly different sizes, so that made it difficult. However, DS#2 usually gets up to go to the toilet at night, so he gets the room closest to the bathroom (and us). DS#1 gets the bigger room, which is further away from us. We'll see what happens once the house is actually built, because they may change their minds by then.
Judie Re: Who gets the biggest bedroom? 15Jun 22, 2008 8:06 pm Thanks all for your replies. DS is 2.5 and DD is only 6 weeks! So not really old enough to choose their own yet. I think to start off with we'll put DS in the big room as he's got the most toys and things, and DD in the medium. If it becomes an issue later in life we'll deal with it then by thinking about who spends more time in their rooms, and all the other points you've all mentioned!
Is good to hear what others do - being firstborn myself I had no problem with the 'oldest gets biggest' deal LOL, but my dh (not firstborn) pointed out the possible unfairness of it, and I do see his point! Asa always thanks all for your advice Simone Re: Who gets the biggest bedroom? 16Jun 22, 2008 8:12 pm Better give it your daughter, from what I’ve seen in homes and my own daughter as well, they have the most amount of STUFF! Ours was pretty easy. The house we're building has 5 bedrooms, main downstairs and 4 upstairs, all with their own ensuites and WIRs, but 1 of them they refer to as "Guest Suite" rather than bedroom 2, because it's bigger than the other 3. Having 3 boys an 1 girl (she's 6, and the youngest), we decided to give that one to her a) b/c she's the only girl, and b) looking to the future, and thinking about Michelle's comment! We let the boys choose which room they wanted, which worked out fine (luckily!) So, it will end up 2 bigger boys at the back, and 2 younger ones at the front.
