Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 19, 2015 10:24 am Is this done through an electrician, and how much does it normally cost (?) Would the builder normally do this (we are using a smaller local builder and are happy to arrange some items ourselves if it is a saving). Thank you Re: Arranging a temporary power pole 2Feb 19, 2015 12:16 pm Usually the builder organises it in conjunction with his sparky although what a lot of guys do these days to save money is get the new meter box installed where it is actually going to be in the new house. It is just temporarily supported by a couple of posts and the new house literally built around it. Stewie Re: Arranging a temporary power pole 3Feb 19, 2015 4:43 pm Stewie, If it's over head wires, it can't be put to a box on the house on star pickets unless there is a property pole and it's run under ground. It can't be run from a temporary pole to another temp meterbox. Well I shouldn't say can't, but it doesn't work that way Re: Arranging a temporary power pole 4Feb 19, 2015 4:45 pm The builder would normally organise the temp pole. The companies that supply and install them put the form in for the connection, not usually the electrician. Some builders may just leave it to the electrician to engage the pole company, others may do it direct. Re: Arranging a temporary power pole 5Feb 19, 2015 8:33 pm Two houses not far from us - both project builders did it this way. Metal conduit down the side of the nearest telegraph pole to underground then presumably a trench and coming up at the meter box. I'd never seen it done this way until I saw it on the forums here. I can't remember whose post it was though and then lo and behold a few months later. Up 'til then we'd always had a temp builders pole and box too. Stewie I do remember seeing that post, was that the one with the neighbour complaining about it or something? I can't believe it was done like that either. Maybe it was like that a long time ago and never registered as a new connection. You certainly can't do it this way, I have queried connection details with energex before, they are one mob that is ridiculously by the book. You will also see many connections done via a flying fox on older homes, but you can't do that anymore now days. I also questioned the conduit down the pole with my electrician a while ago Re: Arranging a temporary power pole 7Feb 19, 2015 9:24 pm Quote: I do remember seeing that post, was that the one with the neighbour complaining about it or something? Hmmm, that doesn't ring a bell. Must be different up North. Sydney Elec is obviously trying to get everybody underground with their cables. What I'm seeing different now to only a few years ago is the gal poles at the boundary and overhead wires from the telegraph pole to the top of the gal pole then underground. Now it seems to be no poles ( unless the people want a POA off their front fascia ) and just as I describe in my post above - conduit off the nearest pole then underground all the way. Stewie Re: Arranging a temporary power pole 8Feb 20, 2015 11:41 am Thanks for your replies. I don't know a lot about this stuff. We have overhead wires. One builder doing a tender for us said to arrange our own temp pole? But there is a sparky he can recommend etc. Another provided a quote on 'services available' and still waiting on the final couple..
