Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 23, 2015 1:27 pm Hi everyone, My name is Andrew. Me and my fiance, we are in the process of buidling our first home and just found out we have a huge issues with asbestos and concrete dumped under our land, which were carefully covered by the previous previous owner. Yesterday, my builder who was preparing the site found out there are buidling concrete underneath our block of land which we did not know or aware of. On top of that he said it may contain asbestos and the cost could be massive to properly remove and fill the hole again. We are building in Adelaide, Sa. It's very much appreciated if anyone can share or guide us through this. Andrew. Re: Asbestos and old concrete dumped underneath our land 2Jan 23, 2015 8:09 pm Hi Andrew. I've sent you a private message. First thing first. Get the concrete tested to make sure it is asbestos. It may be perfectly fine. The builder can do this for you. If proven asbestos, just get the soil cleaned. It will be cheaper. Removing the soil and then replacing is extremely costly. Around 4 times the price of cleaning. Either way, its going to cost you a bit of money. Re: Asbestos and old concrete dumped underneath our land 3Jan 23, 2015 8:25 pm It is also illegal to bury asbestos under the ground on a residential block ( in NSW anyway ). If you find that there is in fact asbestos in the ground I'd be speaking to my solicitor pronto who will take the necessary steps regarding cost reimbursement for its removal . As you can imagine, we are pretty much devastated when the buildet who has 27 years of experience said he had not seen that's kind of cover up before. The most likely cause of your timber swelling (parquetry?) is either a plumbing leak or carelessly leaving water on floors after use or both.
