Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 21, 2015 8:42 pm Hello, I am currently doing a reno and for some reason I decided to paint all my window frames a gloss black including the timber panel in the middle. The frames were a green aluminium and the middle timber panel was painted a pale yellow. The frames came up fairly nice, although it is a pretty time consuming job, but the middle timber panel has been the big problem. It has come up bubbly and no matter how many times I sand it back it comes up patchy and bubbly. And overall I don't know if I like the look of the black timber. So my question is- is there something I can cover this middle panel with? A laminex, another thin plank of timber? I considered sanding them all back to timber but to do one it took forever and a day. The current middle timber panel has a slight indent which may allow something to be inserted on top of it. Re: Painting window frames and middle panel help! 2Jan 22, 2015 9:28 am If the middle panel was originally finished with an oil based stain (which were popular in the 1970's) then water based paint may not adhere properly. After sanding back (again) try applying an oil based undercoat first before repainting Re: Painting window frames and middle panel help! 3Jan 22, 2015 11:42 pm Thanks for the reply. When I sand back the yellow paint which seems more like a laquer kind of peels off so unless sanding all this off back to bare timber (which would be very difficult) you can see the patches where it has come back to timber when painting over it again. This and all the other problems I have had with painting it have led me to look at an option where I could somehow cover the timber panel...
