Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 29, 2014 5:29 pm We have engaged a small private builder to do an extension for us. We have had endless problems with his stuff ups (poured wrong sized slab, have had to change bathroom twice to accommodate his errors, frames all out of plumb, roof pitch wrong....). Have had building inspector give a list of defects. Is there anything we can do other than sit and wait for him to hand over to us a really crappy job??? There's no way he will be finished within his contract time and then there will be the huge list of defects for him to fix! I know we have to give him the right to finish and fix!!!! but we really don't want him continuing to touch the job he's making it worse all the time, has no idea how to build, even the building inspector said the quality of work is worse than a 1st year apprentice! Do we have any options here??? Feeling very helpless and handing over money for such poor quality that will all have to be fixed! You could consider terminating the contract but that requires expert legal advice and you need to make sure you have everything properly documented. There is a thread atm on this and you can get some interesting advice with a google search. If in Vic you could try acting for help from the Building Commission (BACV service) to mediate between you and the builder but it can be a pretty useless experience. Maybe contact your Department of Fair Trading/Consumer Affairs and ask for their advice. If you already have a contract, is the inspection cost stated in there? If not they would be forced to issue you a variation which you could of course object to. 12 25863 You must be new to the internet.
