Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 25, 2014 6:49 am Hi Im building a new house with eden brae homes and they offered a steel frame instead of timber which I accepted. The walk in robe and the pantry in the house have those ugly metal wiring shelves that are brown in colour and just look downright unsightly. I was planning on building my own sheves out of timer but then I realised I would have a steel studded frame. I have seen people hang tv brackets to metal stud walls using toggle bolts but for simple shelving this looks a bit overkill as the hole you have to drill to get the butterfly clip through is massive and it looks like a pain. How would the professionals approach this anyone have any tips on what to do? Thanks Building the Sheffield 25 + 2 sq Re: Fixing wooden shelving to Metal framed house 2Nov 25, 2014 7:30 am Just use sheet metal screws like Tek screws and go straight into a metal stud. It also depends how much load you are going to hang off these screws. You can get the ones with self drilling ends or drill a pilot hole a mm smaller than the diameter of the screw. Im guessing that your talking about self tapping screws the same kind they would use to screw down colourbond sheets to a roof? The only problem is they are a bit chunky and may look unsightly after a while to wouldnt they sag in the hole especially if they were ever pulled out for whatever reasons. Cheers Building the Sheffield 25 + 2 sq Re: Fixing wooden shelving to Metal framed house 4Nov 25, 2014 10:39 am They come in all sorts of sizes with different heads. If you look at the pan head type they look no different from a round head woodscrew. http://lockeyscrew.en.made-in-china.com ... Screw.html The metal studs would be able to take a fair bit of weight no matter what screws you used ( within reason of course ). For the pantry, I'd suggest vertical supports holding the shelves anyway. By the way I wouldn't use just toggle bolts to hold up a big screen TV either. They would be going into just plasterboard. This way I did not need to worry about stud locations or the studs being in the wrong location when installing cupboards. I could fix anywhere that suited the actual cupboards. Strong enough for what? For linen, absolutely. To climb on, no.
