Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 19, 2014 9:38 pm we are about to build a new house (suburban perth). the default design has a gas hot water storage system and gas cooktop. i am quite tempted to upgrade to an induction cooktop & a solar hot water system with electric boosting. in which case there is no point even getting the house connected to gas (its a KDR, currently not connected with electric hws & cooktop). what's everyone's thoughts? is this a stupid idea? we have previously had and loved an induction cooktop so i cant see any issues, just wanting to check it wouldn't affect resale. thanks Re: not connecting a new house to gas 2Oct 19, 2014 10:16 pm What about heating? 3in1 Supadiverta. Re: not connecting a new house to gas 3Oct 20, 2014 8:40 am There was an article on the news this morning saying gas prices in Australia are set to soar as a result of the prices Australian companies can get overseas for exporting bulk gas. http://www.smh.com.au/business/mining-a ... zzfqk.html Somewhere in the order of $400 a year will be added to the gas bill for an average home. That may influence a lot of people when it comes to a gas vs electricity debate or a combo of both for a new house. It may also affect whether people consider solar panels as a part of the equation. Stewie Re: not connecting a new house to gas 4Oct 20, 2014 9:07 am Is natural gas available. I'd definitely get this - mainly for heating - and the BBQ. We went for E for the stove etc. Arguments either way on prices. Re: not connecting a new house to gas 5Oct 20, 2014 9:21 am We are not connecting gas to our new house, no natural gas available where we are. I guess it depends on how you decide to cook, heat etc. We will be having an induction cooktop and ducted heating, all electric. Loving our new home, Upper Hunter NSW on 2.5 acres Re: not connecting a new house to gas 6Oct 20, 2014 10:08 am 1. I have never found natural gas to be cheap. May as well stick with electricity unless you absolutely have to play chef and want things superheated in the blink of an eyelid. 2. Some shires/states have legislation that if gas runs down the street, you must connect to it. A supposed greenhouse reduction initiative. Make sure that isnt applicable to you. Re: not connecting a new house to gas 7Oct 20, 2014 2:27 pm If we had our time again I think we would not bother with Nat. gas. With the .82c daily connection fee + cost of consumption, I'm fairly sure being all solar/electric would work out cheaper. Re: not connecting a new house to gas 8Oct 20, 2014 3:42 pm i opted for no gas and have solar power induction cooktop and solar hot water. i think it is the best.
i live on the north coast of NSW. no heating or cooling at moment but looking at air conditioners Re: not connecting a new house to gas 11Oct 20, 2014 10:31 pm We are in Perth as well and chose not to run gas. We went induction cooktop, solar hot water, and RC AC for heating/cooling. I just didn't see the point in paying the connection fees for something I was never going to use. We also have solar panels that help to offset electrical costs. If I built again I'd do the same thing. That way your house has all the pipework in place, which is very difficult to add later. Then you disconnect gas, and not pay a supply charge - and if ever the situation changes, you can switch. People buying the house later may also be keen on gas.
