Gas instant is better than electric instant, as electric can be quite costly to run. Not sure, but if you can get a non-heat pump electric system, ensure that it has the ports for future solar hot water, and that it also has mid-mounted element. Both are gas offerings, is solar hot water the way to go? Re: Things you forget - summary page 32 4Oct 18, 2014 5:47 pm Long term solar storage hot water is the better option, and since you're looking at gas, it'll never use any gas to boost the hotwater, particulary if the solar hot water is a evacuated tube system.... well you might if you get several days of no sun. Actually, this is a topic better covered in a different section, rather than in this thread. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Instantaneous or Storage hot water? 6Oct 24, 2014 5:21 pm We have just had to replace the storage hot water system put in by New Generation in 2010. It was making really loud popping noises every time someone had a shower that would go on for about 15min each time. Our storage system was placed just near our bedroom window and it was waking me and my partner up when we worked different shifts. I have had different opinions by different plumbers as to what caused it, but most of them seemed to blame our water having a high mineral content. We ended up going gas instantaneous and LOVE it. We are also putting instantaneous in our new build. Re: Instantaneous or Storage hot water? 7Oct 24, 2014 7:31 pm That bubbling/popping noise is usually associated with some SHW systems that are running at very high temperatures. What happens is that the water is at boiling temperature, and like in a car radiator it doesn't boil until you release the radiator cap... in this case the tap is being turned off, the pressure is released and the water is boiling in the tank. Can be quite loud too. Did any of your plumbers bother to check and/or adjust the thermostat ? Mineral content would effect the tank corrosion amongst other things. Re: Instantaneous or Storage hot water? 8Oct 25, 2014 9:58 am I recently replaced the tempering valve on my HWS and found that the inlet filer and filter coming out of the tank were full of junk. Cleaned them when I replaced the valve. Remember HWS with a storage tank will have a sacrificial bar in them. As this corrodes it will drop pieces in the tank and these can work their way up the water pipes, so check fittings also if things don't seem right. bpratt made some good points Re: Instantaneous or Storage hot water? 9Oct 25, 2014 1:04 pm I recently replaced the tempering valve on my HWS and found that the inlet filer and filter coming out of the tank were full of junk. Not correct . . . Our last house had Instantaneous Gas with Solar. It worked by having a large solar storage tank with the Instantaneous system on the outlet. This boosted the water temperature if the water from the tank wasn't hot enough. An efficient way of ensuring consistent and constant hot water as the temperature was only boosted for the water used, if needed. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! I guess I should have qualified my statement by saying that instantaneous systems do not have storage tanks, but there are gas boosted solar systems that do the gas boosting after the tank if water in the tank isn't up to temperature. Depending upon your circumstances a mid element electric boosting could actually be a cheaper system to run than gas boosting, as gas boosting heats the water to 70 or 75 degrees, only to go via a tempering valve back down to 50 degrees. Definately if looking at going hybrid or completely off grid mid element electric boosting is the way to go. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld.
