Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 11, 2014 9:10 pm Hi all, I'm building a new home in an estate which doesn't have NBN. However there is an option with the builder to put in an NBN provision, any ideas whether it is worth going for it? Currently already over budget, and it will add another $1800 to the cost. Will the NBN provision be useful for other Internet, cable TV, phone etc.. related things? or is it purely for NBN, and if my estate doesn't have it, it is probably useless.. Thanks Re: NBN provision with new build? 2Oct 11, 2014 9:42 pm We got Telstra Velocity - fibre optic. Which is similar to NBN. It provides TV / Foxtel / I'net / phone etc. Re: NBN provision with new build? 3Oct 11, 2014 10:08 pm If you don't have nbn at this stage, any ETA from nbn website? If you are over budget, would rather skip it for time being. It comes with a conduit and 2 data ports. You can always call a local data installer to get this done for far cheaper than $1800. Re: NBN provision with new build? 4Oct 13, 2014 11:19 pm Id get perhaps conduits added in various rooms you'd like data points for computer (smart TVs, X boxes, or even phone in future) or coax cable for Tv/foxtel etc. Telstra isn't allowed to put in the old copper cables for phone and internet anymore like they used to because NBN is being rolled out. They do have to provide comms though by which case I suspect they will say "here is a cell phone and plan for $ nth and here is an internet dongle"... I took the builders bundle with my build but also add 6 X 250 dia conduits throughout (ensuring also a conduit and wall box for electrical wiring to add power points later (although I just had my build do these as they weren't much more than my sparky). I had conduit put in my spare room for data and tv cable, another in study, couple in theatre, couple in lounge and one in alfresco (that i'll probably never use... . They didn't add significantly to my electrical costs given they will help future proof the house and its easier to do now than later in some walls (like your internal walls for instance).
