This is obviously to prevent water pooling around the slab, but we are wondering if we could put some road base or compacted fill on the ground and lay some decking on top of some stumps 150-200mm off ground level? Reason is we have split level home and some of the concreting would have many steps going up and down, with decking we could eliminate most of the steps and make it look aesthetically better. Is this possible without compromising the slab? Any other ideas without costing a fortune welcome Re: Impermeable layer around house - Decking? 2Oct 04, 2014 10:16 pm Only way I can see it working is to pour concrete and then fix your joist to the concrete then deck on top. The thing I don't understand is how you have to have steps with concrete and not with decking. Floor and ground levels would still be the same so I would imagine you need steps or ramps with whatever you choose to go with. We thought about pouring a slab underneath as you mentioned but were trying to avoid spending money on that if it were possible as we'd never see it. We always knew the landscaping was going to be a challenge when we bought the block, which strangely (and stubbornly) enough we thought we could do. Oh well no harm in give it a crack Re: Impermeable layer around house - Decking? 4Oct 05, 2014 6:56 am Sunshine2013 Hi All, In my building contract it states i need to provide a 1000mm impermeable (concrete) layer around the slab of the house to prevent slab heave/movement at 1:20 after handover (we are on reactive soil). Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck?
