Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 22, 2014 1:24 pm Hi all, I would like to start the Building and Construction course (part time throughout the evenings) with my goal to become a registered builder (DBM). I have completed by building surveying course to find out my real passion lays in building construction (organizing/managing of building works) My worry however is not that the course or assignments will be hard, I will try to manage that plus with the help of a couple of family friends who are builders, my worry is the part were I need to become registered and sit in front of the board. I asked my family friends who are builders but they sat for their builder license 20 years ago so m guessing things have changed. Is there anybody here who could inform me of how hard the actual registration process is? the questions asked from the board? etc. I am in the process of building a house now as an owner builder were I will be taking plenty of photos. Does anyone have any tips or any input would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Mick Re: builders registration? (Victoria) 2Sep 23, 2014 12:46 pm hi there,i have recently completed my dbu, domestic builder unlimited, the certificate 4 in building and construction wasnt bad , each day you more or less complete each part as a group(class)at the end of the course you need to gather a lot of information ,this seemed hard but i took one small section and completed it and moved on.as for fronting the board,it was one bloke not a board as such,i failed a couple of section .however it was for the best.he sent me away to go over those section so when i fronted him again i only had to deal with those section.not the whole thing again,So go for it,it will take time and hard work, you can do it www.bestcordlesstoolsreviews.com http://www.bestcordlesstoolsreviews.comall reviews by qualified tradesman Re: builders registration? (Victoria) 3Sep 23, 2014 1:11 pm Hey Micky Someone with your currently qualifications will be highly regarded by the board. Nevertheless you will still need to show that your capable of running a business successfully. I would suggest that you treat it lilke a job interview and that everyone is difference. In your case I would be trying to show that you do in fact have practical experience. So it is important that in your owner built home that you research and understand each phase including OH&S requirements. I think you will get a lot out of the cert IV course. Preferable do this before you start your house. The course should be to hard for someone with your skill level. Remember in your case it will be the hands on experience the board will be after. Given you only want a DBM they may go easier on you but you are still going to have to know the process. If someone went in with a good trades background they will be focusing on the soft skills instead/ For reference, this is the Austlii reference.
