Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 21, 2014 2:22 pm Hi all, I own a weatherboard home which has a small cellar room below it. The cellar appears to have been there for decades, but I only recently got around to going down there and cleaning out all the junk, debris and dust. Please have a look at the photos I took down there as they will tell the story. The cellar is open to the elements with a gap varying between 15-30cm across the top South and East sides. The floor is dirt with a few large pavers. The cellar dimensions approx 2000L 1600W 1800H but there is a fair bit of bowing to the timber/corrugated wall. I would like to use it as a storage space and maybe do a bit of home brewing down there. With that in mind I would like to seal up the gap at the top of the walls, seal up/cover the dirt floor and maybe insulate the walls/ceiling. I'm after ideas for a quick and simple solution for sealing/finishing the walls and floor and also the best way to close the gap between the top of the wall and the bottom of the above floor. It is dry as a bone down there, I was working in there less than a week after major storms and everything was extremely dry. The photos were taken right after I blasted it with a hose to settle the decades of kicked uo dust. So luckily I don't think I need to worry about water. I would still like to seal it from pests. I am extermely green with this kind of thing so if anyone is able to give a few pointers on the kind of techniques I should be researching for this job I would be very grateful. Thanks! From me as a decorator....but hey since no on else has answered, here I go. I just looked at your photos, on the cheap....I would close the gape over with more corrugated iron. Get some insulation bats, place in the cavity of the walls and put more iron up over the insulation. I like the idea of the paver's, so maybe get more and top the floor with them. There you go, concealed from the elements... Good luck!! The space also seems to be a bit small you may want to consider making the space larger and putting in a proper retaining wall and floor, there are various cost effective methods available. In the end it always comes down to cost, whether you can do some of the work, which method you choose, etc, etc HTH Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Building Standards; Getting It Right!
