Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 06, 2014 10:36 pm I have an investment property being built in QLD, and took a call from my builder this morning explaining that vandals (young kids apparently - although no one was caught) had broken into my property under construction and caused a whole lot of damage. Mostly kicking in plaster, as you can see in the images below. Vandalism on construction site: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ My builders insurance should cover this, although it will delay the whole project by weeks, which is really frustrating. Has anyone else had experience with this? Any suggestions I should take up with my builder for greater deterrence? Do the video surveillance signs actually work? Thanks. Owners are getting tired of all these cost increases...unfortunately its layers on layers Thanks for the feedback guys. I believe my builder's insurance will be covering the damage, so I don't need to worry about that, it's just the extra delays we'll have to now deal with. My builder seemed to think that putting up fencing would just be another 'challenge' for the young vandals, and that they have had experiences with kids jumping over the fencing or getting through and doing a lot of damage anyway (if they're determined). I believe construction fencing is compulsory in NSW, but apparently not in QLD? Re: Vandalism on Building Site - Experiences and what to do? 5Aug 07, 2014 1:52 pm There are some temporary fences here, but in all honesty they don't do very much... they are wide open most of the time and easily accessible. Put a fence around something, show it's not to be trespassed on and hey! what to you get? a challenge. Not saying that ones that don't have it are better off, but it's not going to necessarily be a deterrent in itself. It is unfortunately part and parcel of it sometimes, new estates with yet to be populated streets and construction are hang out spots for kids looking for a bit of a thrill. The builders can become quite blasé about it, they do see it quite a bit and make allowances for it. When it is your place being built however, that personal attachment kicks in. Signs, warning signs may be a deterrent, but again if they're determined to cause a ruckus, that won't stop them standing on the street and pitching a rock or a brick at a window and running away. Just luck, or lack therof sometimes ![]() Sorry to see what's happened, that would break my heart and anger me all in equal measure. Some people (and kids) just really have no idea what the implications of their actions are. Re: Vandalism on Building Site - Experiences and what to do? 7Aug 18, 2014 2:39 pm Unfortunately my partner and I suffered thieves on our construction site on the weekend. They went through and stole all the electrical cables, yanking them through and using our steel frames to roughly cut them, damaging the meter box and the sisal... Very very disappointing, it is covered by our builders insurance but the inconvenience of it and the general lack of respect for peoples property. We were told by the police it is a very very common occurrence. They reckon they have at least 10 calls on a Monday morning from construction managers reporting thefts and damages. In our estate there is only one house that is completed and moved in, and it is also a rural area so unfortunately we are quite open to theft. We have a fence up but this doesnt deter people unfortunately. Building a Modified Coral Daydream 28, first build, first home and land owners. Acreage Build in Buccan, QLD. I feel the pain... it doesn't make you feel good does it when (a very small number of) people are so disrespecting of your property... Hopefully delays can be kept to a minimum. Based on all my discussions with people, as an estate becomes more built out, this type of vandalism should not occur. Let's hope so! Re: Vandalism on Building Site - Experiences and what to do? 9Aug 19, 2014 9:48 pm I just heard that there's to be a street party near my new home build this weekend, so I'm getting a bit concerned it might end up on facebook and have something get out of control, and my house is the only one under construction. I'm planning on hanging around my home on the night just to ensure nothing happens. Just hope I'm getting worried for nothing. I would be worried if I heard that but maybe I am still feeling a little sensitive after what happened on the weekend. I just dont understand the mentality of people who think they can walk in to someone eles's property and take what they like... Our sparkies finished yesterday again and I felt like camping out at the house last night because the plasterboard is supposed to go in today... But I havent had any calls yet to say anything has been tampered with again so fingers crossed it is full steam ahead for us now. A good example is expressing oneself with graffiti. I wonder what they'd say if you came to their place and "expressed" yourself on their property ? I'd be worried about those who wanted privacy to pee etc. They'd rationalise it somehow. Re: Vandalism on Building Site - Experiences and what to do? 12Aug 20, 2014 8:53 am Vandalism and theft is rife on building sites because there is no real punishment. Builder is already charging you for site security and maintenance why are you not getting it? Vandalism and theft are predictable and that is why a professional builder should erect temporary fence around the site for security and maintain it, unlocking in the morning and locking up at end of the day. Regardless of what anyone says a complete and well maintained fence is a deterrent. Loosers will just move on to easier target next door or down the street. As owner I would not be happy to have my house damaged during construction if builder has not taken every reasonable precaution, regardless of insurance. You are paying for a new job not a repair. On recent inspection I noticed a volume builder has put up IP cameras following material thefts. No problems since. There was an incident earlier this year in our suburb where a multi-million build was broken into by some young guys and set alight causing over $100,000 worth of damage. Apart from the structural steel, nearly all the entire upper story framing had to be demolished. Several other builds in the area have had similar problems just not on such a grand scale. Woe betide any a$$hole that tries that on my upcoming build if I catch them. Re: Vandalism on Building Site - Experiences and what to do? 16Aug 25, 2014 6:12 pm Temporary fencing is a mild deterrent at best. I reckon that for someone that is semi-retired, setting up a business that provides and sets up active monitoring devices on building sites could have potential. After some rubbish dumping and theft at my building site, I looked into motion activated sensors with video capture but they were rather expensive at around $500+ per unit. I would have happily rented one for a few weeks for say $100. Problem with vandalism versus theft, is that it doesn't take very long to throw a rock of two through the windows, and run off down the road. I'm not too sure how you could set up an alarm on a house that isn't fully finished, so that it won't set off false alarms too easily. Fencing like TFH and other companies supplied, is a good way to keep a building site secure, particulary if you have good tradies that will secure the fence properly at the end of the day. Of course most won't. ![]() Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. ![]() Blog : http://bandlnewhomebuild.blogspot.com H1 thread : viewtopic.php?f=38&t=68283 . They dont stop vandals and criminals, in fact it just hides them better once theyre in! On top of that the fences accumulate rubbish and almost always look untidy.
