Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 28, 2014 6:37 pm If my neighbour's garage is on the boundary, and my side has 1.5m wide lawn all the way down the side of the fence, do I end my fence up to where his garage begins? Thereby incorporating his brick wall as part of my background landscaping? Hubby tells me if I build my Colorbond fence all of the way up the side of his house, I'm "giving the neighbour" whatever amount of land it took to build the posts. So is that what you do? Their bricks are your landscaping? If so, I better look into getting one MASSIVE decorative screen to disguise the bricks, because that will bother me. 19.03.14 - Land Settlement 15.04.14 - Building Permit 28.04.14 - Earthworks 14.05.14 - Slab Stage 20.05.14 - Frame Stage 11.06.14 - Lock Up Stage 03.07.14 - Fix Stage 15.08.14 - New Home Presentation Re: Neighbour's Garage on Boundary - Fence Question 2Jul 29, 2014 11:53 am The simple answer to your question is, yes, the brick wall would form part of your boundary "fence" unless you want to fence next to it, thereby losing a small amount of your land. TBH I don't think colourbond is necessarily nicer to look at than bricks but I get that it's a less streamlined look to have different materials forming your boundary. Maybe try and use it to your advantage and espalier a nice fruit tree on the brick wall? Re: Neighbour's Garage on Boundary - Fence Question 3Jul 29, 2014 12:03 pm Our neighbour built on the boundary, our fencing starts from the end of their garage. We also have a little gate in line with the front of their garage... just to hide our hot water meter etc. Put a screen up and plant vines or plants in the screen perhaps? I've come to terms with it. I've tried to console myself with the fact that it's cheaper to not fence all the way up. grom40 TBH I don't think colourbond is necessarily nicer to look at than bricks but I get that it's a less streamlined look to have different materials forming your boundary. Maybe try and use it to your advantage and espalier a nice fruit tree on the brick wall? Colorbond (in Teatree colour) is part of our Estate Guidelines, so I had no choice there. I'm going to sound awful, but I don't like the colour of that guy's bricks. I will try to use it to my advantage somehow, but just like I would not like someone screwing something into my bricks, I won't use this neighbour's wall either. Nice idea though. Surely I'll find something. 19.03.14 - Land Settlement 15.04.14 - Building Permit 28.04.14 - Earthworks 14.05.14 - Slab Stage 20.05.14 - Frame Stage 11.06.14 - Lock Up Stage 03.07.14 - Fix Stage 15.08.14 - New Home Presentation Re: Neighbour's Garage on Boundary - Fence Question 5Jul 29, 2014 1:40 pm Not sure where you are located, but in QLD a 'nil' boundary (so what your describiing with a non habitable garage on the boundary) is still 200mm from the actual survey's boundary. Meaning the person with the garage has lost the length of garage usually 6m x .2m in actual land.. (1.2m2) .. What some do is fence on the boundary and stop at the end of the garage and fill the little gap then use the garage as rest of fence, or they fence along boundary the whole way leaving 200mm x 6m of dead space betwene garage and fence (i did the latter to mine) because i had the nil boundary i ddint want my neighbour using my fence as over time ppl paint them or stick things to them if you put a fence they are less likely to do this... bit more about how i did mine here: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70307 http://www.betterthansheets.com.au - Why use sheets for curtains in your brand new home use Better Than Sheets Temporary Paper blinds instead! My biggest problem is how to hide it. I don't know how I feel about it but sometimes I do get a bit annoyed. Re: Neighbour's Garage on Boundary - Fence Question 9Jul 29, 2014 8:32 pm I actually think it looks sillier to have a fence and then a big brick wall behind it. If not bag the wall paint it or put a vertical garden on it. Use it as an asset rather than an eye sore Re: Neighbour's Garage on Boundary - Fence Question 10Jul 29, 2014 8:45 pm Though they're good ideas, I'll be honest - if somebody bagged / painted my brick wall, I would lose it. It's not my neighbours' bricks / wall to alter. In turn, I wouldn't do it to someone else's. 19.03.14 - Land Settlement 15.04.14 - Building Permit 28.04.14 - Earthworks 14.05.14 - Slab Stage 20.05.14 - Frame Stage 11.06.14 - Lock Up Stage 03.07.14 - Fix Stage 15.08.14 - New Home Presentation Re: Neighbour's Garage on Boundary - Fence Question 13Jul 29, 2014 9:13 pm by law you are not to touch the wall with asking first I looked up when my neighbour's garage wall went up. I felt the same too, but now I am over it. I think it's a bigger deal for my neighbour because they can't get to their wall with my fence up. I also thought you were asking the question when you asked " their bricks are your landscaping?" Meaning you have a right to decorate them. Re: Neighbour's Garage on Boundary - Fence Question 17Jul 29, 2014 10:15 pm I always thought that a boundary fence is paid 50/50 by both neighbours, therefore each side of it is up to the respective fence owner. Re: Neighbour's Garage on Boundary - Fence Question 18Jul 29, 2014 10:18 pm I get what you're saying. I think at the time I asked the question I was disappointed that after taking so much care to choose colours so carefully (inside and out) I would end up having about 6m of a wall that wasn't my choice. I've accepted it now. Could be worse. I'm sure in 3 months I won't even see the wall anymore. Re: Neighbour's Garage on Boundary - Fence Question 20Jul 29, 2014 10:28 pm bpratt I always thought that a boundary fence is paid 50/50 by both neighbours, therefore each side of it is up to the respective fence owner. Yes, but if his garage is built up to his boundary line, he won't want to pay for a fence that is to the side of it and therefore on my property alone. Also, I've been told that I would be surrendering that small part of land between the post/fence and the neighbour's wall. Does your head in if you think about it enough.
