Lots of rain over the past few weeks and have noticed a smell coming up through the drains holes that our downpipes direct rainwater to. Is this a sign that the soakwells may not be functioning very well and water is sitting in them for too long? Re: Stale smell coming from soakwells 2Jul 27, 2014 6:44 pm If you are in a sandy area, which most of perth is, I don't think water would be "sitting" in them. However it has been very wet and the ground is likely to be near saturated, not drying out between rain. It will go away in time. Re: Stale smell coming from soakwells 4Jul 27, 2014 6:56 pm It's definitely sandy - Canning Vale grey/white sand - you're probably right. Just hadn't experienced it before but previously had downpipes plumbed direct in to drains so that may be why I'm noticing it Re: Stale smell coming from soakwells 5Jul 29, 2014 5:09 pm Depending on where you are in caning vale, given the amount of water laying around in some parts, the water table in your area might be higher than normal and contributing to the saturated conditions and smell. There is a lot of surface water in areas that haven't been like they are for a number of years. Areas around Nicholson rd, armadale rd etc. Re: Stale smell coming from soakwells 6Jul 29, 2014 5:18 pm we have a considerable amount of standing water in the scrub between us and Nicholson Road. It's supposed to be a swale that drains to a POS and then drains away but the developer and council messed up so the water just sits there.
