Re: Concrete Structures 6Aug 04, 2014 1:50 pm 3083936 What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a precast concrete wall structure as opposed to other methods of constructing a multi-storey building in terms of design, construction, use and as a developer? Would a precast concrete walling system be appropriate for a 12 storey apartment building? Hi 3083936 There are huge advantages in using Tilt-up/Precast Concrete in multi storey constructions I dont go above 3-4 storeys, IMO above that incurs diminishing returns (profit) as a developer Advantages 1. It can be as much as 20% cheaper than Brick/Block construction (PC requires synergy along the entire supply chain) 2. Fast construction 3. Requires precision in design, engineering and execution 4. Right design saves on concrete forms 5. Optimal design saves money overall 6. Basically, Concrete is the cheapest building material in the world (<$200m3 AUS) Disadvantages 1. On Difficult sites Crane accessibility & cost 2. Services have to be prelayed 3. Design has to be modular 4. limitations on length and weight of panels 5. Limited scope for changes 6. Tilt-up requires on site casting beds (space) but no transport costs HTH Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless. Control joints may reduce ugly cracking during periods of soil… 3 9862 Hi all I need a guidance on how far I need to space expansion joints in the concrete driveway and its type (keyway/foam.) Contraction joints are at 3m max for a 125 slab. Thanks 0 10940 |
