Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Theater rooms?? 21Jul 24, 2014 10:21 pm I have a theater room at my current house and when guests come around, its the only room they want to be in.... Also use it to watch movies regularly. I find it great Projectors are so cheap these days, you can have a 150" screen + HD 1080 3D projector for $1500 supply + installed. Cost as much as a standard size LED TV. Re: Theater rooms?? 22Jul 25, 2014 5:35 am i have a theatre room 3.5 x 4 it is setup as the theatre room or as we call it media room. if i have a overflow of guests i always set them up in this room. it is a great area and being soundproof the x box playstation tv etc can be loud without annoying the rest of the house Re: Theater rooms?? 23Jul 29, 2014 2:45 pm I like going to the movies and no one's theatre room I've ever been in comes close. I don't understand blacking out the room unless you want to watch movies during the day time (can I have your life please lol). I don't have time during daylight hours. We preferred to invest in our living area with beautiful lounges and speakers. I'm sorry if this offends anyone but I'm a bit anti video games. My husband plays them occasionally but I think they're anti social and luckily for me he really only plays when I'm not home. I don't like all the controllers and cords ****** around either. Also I think a nice light airy room is so much more relaxing than being in a dark closed in room. I find them a little claustrophobic. BUT I totally understand how kids having movie nights would be so much fun for them. Re: Theater rooms?? 24Jul 29, 2014 3:53 pm The blacking out is really to reduced the light reflecting surfaces. It's really each to their own but remember it is also a hobby for a lot if people. I like it because I like it as a hobby but also I like the family time together. I have definitely been in home theaters that kill public cinemas. Re: Theater rooms?? 25Jul 29, 2014 5:40 pm AussieMark you are totally right. Each to their own and everyone's home is different. If I had teenagers I would see the appeal I'm sure. I will have things in my home that relate to my hobbies that others don't like. I didn't know about the reflective surfaces. The old style cinema in my small town shows new and classic films once a month and we always go that. It is so much fun but I also think it's hard to find worthwhile things to watch. We've got apple TV with all the latest movies and half the time I decide to watch a movie but I can't find anything lol Re: Theater rooms?? 26Jul 29, 2014 10:51 pm joannek I'm sorry if this offends anyone but I'm a bit anti video games. I've heard people use this argument against video games before - that they are anti social. And yet it never occurs to the same person to say "I'm anti reading. I think it's anti social". There are a multitude of activities and hobbies anyone can undertake that are done in isolation. Video games aren't actually an exclusively solo activity. Console games are frequently multi player and friends can sit together playing together. There are also a multitude of online multiplayer games that bring people together. I've seen numerous people get involved in some of the big multiplayer games that build their own teams out of people they meet through the game and then end up socializing outside of the game. There are all sorts of social groups available built solely around games. A hobby shared by others is also a conversation point. Go to any school and listen to the kids talking with each other about the games they're into. Sometimes it pays to be little more open minded in your opinions and realise that just because you personally don't enjoy something, doesn't mean it is valueless. There are people that like quilting. I don't, but it doesn't mean it isn't as valid an activity as any other if it is a hobby you enjoy. I mightn't like seeing material and needles and thread laying around but it doesn't mean id tell my wife her hobby is pointless and I don't like her doing it Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. My only exposure to video games are violent ones with lots of swearing etc. and I can't help it - I don't like that but I know they're big with the youth. Ah but there's a difference in saying "I don't like violent games" and "I'm anti video games, they are anti social and I've made sure my husband has to play them while I'm out of the house, and the look of the equipment annoys me". Re: Theater rooms?? 29Jul 29, 2014 11:47 pm My husband can play them when he likes - he's an adult. He just doesn't tend to when I'm there as he knows I don't like them. That said, we are renting a tiny lounge room place and the yes, the noise and cords take over the whole house. The controller cords annoy me because my mother lives with us and I worry she'll trip as her sight is gone. When we are in a bigger place it will be fine. Anyway, sorry to the original poster for the hijack. Re: Theater rooms?? 30Jul 30, 2014 1:14 am I agree on the video game thing, personally I would prefer them to be in a separate area but I still am fine with them. I think the issue is that if the kit is not packed up it can be unsightly and potentially hazardous. Joan, to solve this issue I would purchase wifi controller and cordless head phones. Both problems taken care of, no cords and no sound... Re: Theater rooms?? 31Aug 01, 2014 7:24 am Video games arnt violent UNLESS! you as the mother or father buy them for your kids then what do you expect? depending on the game, they are interactive and they will improve your personal skills such as concentration and problem solving also there has been a study in the USA stating that video games are a form of stress relief and can aid young teens who have had a rough day at school/Life to take a break from reality and go and kill some zombies which has decreased depression rates and improved the likelihood of teamwork .. what is the harm in that? i play games myself and as an adult it is handy just to relax if you have never experienced that then you have no idea what you are talking about Re: Theater rooms?? 32Aug 01, 2014 9:18 am I think the issue with video games are the reported issues of a minority of users that were already predisposed to act out violently. You would have also found out that even without video games they would have been violent anyway. I don't play video games myself, as I got sick of being killed off all the time in them... I've heard people use this argument against video games before - that they are anti social. And yet it never occurs to the same person to say "I'm anti reading. I think it's anti social". Too true. Back in 1996 when the Internet went mainstream and I was in school, everyone thought we were nerds because we spent a few hours a day on our PCs. Today, every person is on their computer or Iphones consuming content all day. So is everyone a nerd/geek now? Re: Theater rooms?? 34Aug 11, 2014 11:07 pm I personally love that my hubby plays video games as a means to unwind.... It means he's home and not p*ssed down at the pub or with a pack of his mates in clubs like some of the husbands of my friends! I will take him anyday choosing to unwind online playing multi player with his mates, whilst I get to do my own thing a few meters away on the iPad. It's great Sometimes I even get really enthralled in the games with storylines and find myself watching and getting involved. To each their own definitely, but I am thankful for them (and a hubby who happens to love them).
