Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 01, 2008 3:35 pm Our staircase has just been installed. It sits in the main family room area and is a bit of a feature to the open plan living area. They've just installed the stair risers and treads and it looks great.
We really like the look of the open staircase and have been thinking of asking the builder to work around the existing design and not do a 1/2 height wall as per the initial plan. Any pros/cons to this (apart from cost)? Re: open staircase 3Jun 01, 2008 4:36 pm So the half height wall was to come out to the bottom of the stairs at half the height of a normal wall so it sort of enclosed the stairs ? If a yes to that - then I'd say no don;t do it.
Personally I like the stairs to be open from tread height upwards, then as you go down or up them you can see other people in the other areas before you get to the bottom of the stairs or as you are walking up them. As to totally open - on a negative - internal stairs tend to have junk stored under them over time - so being able to see it all the time will mean keeping that area clean and tidy - so I prefer the understairs area to be enclosed and the stairs themselves open sort of like this photo shows. Steve Re: open staircase 4Jun 01, 2008 7:04 pm A friend of mine has a fully open staircase and had a wine rack constructed in the underneath section - its a great use of an akward space Re: open staircase 7Jun 01, 2008 7:53 pm royalblue Middle pic with the charcoal carpets & wall looks stunning. agree with Ash ... it looks stunning. when I mentioned 1/2 height I meant from the treads upward. ATM we have a 1/2 height wall above the treads. I think the photos look great and are exactly what I am after. Re: open staircase 8Jun 03, 2008 10:41 am We planned for our stairs to be open all the way around pretty much, even on the top floor, but I'm worried about heat loss, is that a big concern?
So we kind of have U-shape stairs, and where they end up in our "tv" room upstairs I was going to have it all open to make the room look bigger, with only railings around the stairs and even at the top (overlooking the first stair downstairs).
