Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 23, 2014 1:56 am I just discovered something that I think is neat. I can't sleep tonight so I am heading to the kitchen to make a cuppa. I have a led headlight on. I look up at out newly painted ceiling and see a glaringly obvious greyish area. At first I thought it was some sort of water stain as we have had leak problems. I turned on the main light and it was no longer visible. I got a ladder and climbed up for a closer look and on close inspection I saw it was a square of ceiling that has been missed, that is not fully painted. It was glaringly obvious with the led in a dark room and barely discernible under normal light. Using the led I found three other small areas... all of which I painted over. Now this might be something everybody already knows but it is a very easy way of making sure you have an even coat of ceiling white after you paint. Just scan with one of those little led headlights in a dark room. Remember, painting is done during the day under natural light. If its not visible under those conditions then its not a problem. Re: LED headlight picks up painting gaps. 4Jun 23, 2014 6:07 am That may be true - but the painted and paintless areas might 'age' differently so it is probably good to have it everywhere! Otherwise why bother painting it to start with Re: LED headlight picks up painting gaps. 5Jun 23, 2014 7:24 am Glancing light problems are old news ( http://www.how2plaster.com/gl.html ) Re: LED headlight picks up painting gaps. 6Jun 23, 2014 8:02 am Quote: And the lesson here is not to walk around in the dark with a head torch looking at your paint work. Haha, that's the first thing I thought of too mgilla. That's what light switches are for takeiteasy. Stewie Re: LED headlight picks up painting gaps. 7Jun 23, 2014 8:41 am That's one of the things that they do on home inspections, go around with bright led torches now to show up ceiling imperfections. We'd done a ceiling repair where we had a leaking roof, and thought I'd done an alright job, but when he ran the torch across it, it looked real dod-gy brothers effort ! Why is dod gy a forbidden word ? I wasn't defaming anyone. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Blog : http://bandlnewhomebuild.blogspot.com H1 thread : viewtopic.php?f=38&t=68283 . Stewie True enough Stewie but if I wake my senile old dogs they think it's morning and start whinging at me. They are deaf as a post so if I keep the light off them they stay sleeping. I don't agree that "if you can't see it in normal light don't worry." - with imprefections yes but this was little areas not covered properly. If I am going to paint I want an continuous surface so it all ages the same (as has been said). It doesn't have to be a LED headlight either. I used to use a normal lead light off a lead and run that over the walls before the painter was due to start. I used to pick up all sorts of imperfections that the gyprocker had missed so I'd just fill those with some finishing cement and sand off the next day. This was especially important if the clients were going to have wall mounted up-lights. I didn't do the ceilings though. Aim for a Level 4 finish at least and if you are finicky or just want a really good job - Level 5. A lot of it comes down to the plasterer too , not the painter.
