Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 21, 2014 3:08 am I am just wondering if anyone had experience on this? They just started framing on my house, and I noticed some inconsistent issues with the framing - for example the studs on some parts are not spaced evenly and some are even slanted. Is this normal??! Framing stage quality of Plantation Home 2May 21, 2014 6:09 am Dr House let them build your youse, you'll put yourself in an early grave. If your concerned have an independant frame inspection done, the studs under the window, not spaced evenly is different to not spaced correctly. the gap between them doesnt have to be even, the slanting looks ugly so just ask them to plumb them because that looks ugly to someone who has never built a house. im sure if you talk to your SS and express your concerns he'll get the chippies to hit them with a hammer and plumb them. Re: Is this normal? Framing stage quality of Plantation Home 3May 21, 2014 7:12 am You are jumping the gun. I agree with mgilla. Builder must be given opportunity to do his job and present the frame for inspection. Even if there are errors in framing they are likely to be corrected before frame is ready for inspection. Who is to say SS won't tell his framer: fix this this and this. Chill out and take a step back, you might live longer. You worry too much because you don't have your own independent inspector to advise you properly. Is it worth it? Framing stage quality of Plantation Home 5May 21, 2014 9:24 am Hi, While I sort of agree with the posts above regarding the about the amount of stress you’ll be putting on yourself by checking your build constantly; and giving the builder a chance to ‘fix’ things you think are wrong I wouldn't wait to bring your concerns to the attention of the site supervisor. Asking questions will show the SS that you are looking over your build and taking an interest in its construction. If you get on ok with the SS then ask about things like the uneven spacing of the studs, if they meet the standards then you’ll have learnt something by asking. Obvious problems like the collapsed lintel will be fixed but I’d mention it anyway. What is a little alarming though is if there are a number of issues, that while not technically ‘wrong’ show a lack of attention to detail or care (like studs not be plumb). If after having a chat with the SS you don’t not satisfied that everything will be fixed or you think you were fobbed off then I would employee an independent building inspector (not the one used by the project builder). Ultimately it comes down to two things: 1. It costs nothing to ask questions, remember you are their client! 2. You are the only one who cares 100% about your build! Good luck. ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: Is this normal? Framing stage quality of Plantation Home 6May 21, 2014 5:20 pm Thanks guys! I would definitely voice my concern to the site supervisor. I was just checking on the forum before I voice my concern so I don't sound like I am jumping the gun there "Occam's Razor. The simplest explanation is almost always somebody screwed up." Re: Is this normal? Framing stage quality of Plantation Home 7May 21, 2014 6:26 pm Suggest to just send an email to your builder addressing the concerns. If you don't see them being proactive in trying to fix the issues, then complain about it. Re: Is this normal? Framing stage quality of Plantation Home 8May 22, 2014 5:37 am While I do agree with others on asking questions, I think you better be warned that sometimes site supervisors are working on their preferences. They might say something you want to hear only. There are still great site supervisors out there thou. There are two ways to go about this.. one is to do your research and learn how houses are built so you know what you should be looking for. This takes time and effort thou. The second one is to seek professional advice. Get yourself an independent building inspector to check everything for you. They know much more than you for sure. They would be checking to see if studs are aligned correctly as oppose to what you have expected.. ie: studs aligned evenly.. Good luck.
