Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 26, 2008 12:48 pm Does anyone know how much electricians (and is that who does this?) charge to fit new lights? Meaning, in our new apartment there are those sort of shell-like dome lights that have the slightly frosted swirly glass, with the cover held on by clasps which are either sort of pointy or like a claw foot type thing.
Anyway, we want to get newer, nicer or different versions of these fitted. The actual lights themselves are between $15 and $150 per light, but how much would the electrician charge to actually fit them? (there would be about 5 of them I think) Oh, and does anyone know how much they charge to install new power points? We always find there are never enough power points or they’re in the wrong places. I wonder how complicated or easy it is to do this? Thank you! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How much to install new lights / fit new power points? 2May 26, 2008 8:41 pm Yes, an electrician is the right person to contact. Not sure if there are any registered electrical contractors on this board to confirm the going rates, but as an industrial sparky with plenty of wiring experience I'd say that the lights would be inexpensive to install.
The power points are another matter; if you wanted to get one installed on the other side of a wall where one already exists, this would also be an inexpensive job. But if you wanted to get one installed where there are no others around, it could be difficult depending on whether the sparky has good access in the roof space (or under the floor). If you live in an apartment, I guess this could be problematic! Maybe get an electrician in to do the lights, and ask about the power points at the same time. If they're simple he might do them at the same time, and if not you'll know what you're up for. Geoff - Decophile. I actually thought it might be the other way around, and that fitting new lights would be more expensive than creating new power points. It does make sense though re the having to get into walls & roof and stuff. (we're on the ground floor of a 3 storey apartment block...eep. He could get into the floor though, except I don't know how...would he have to make a big hole? It's a concrete floor. If he had to get into a wall would it leave a huge hole? *scared*) I hope there are ample power points! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How much to install new lights / fit new power points? 4May 26, 2008 8:57 pm Concrete floor? No way. I was referring to, say, a house with a wooden floor. Anyhoo, get him around and see what he says! Geoff - Decophile.
