Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 26, 2008 12:36 pm Has anyone actually mucked up and picked the wrong colours for paint and/or carpet?
I’m really scared I’m not going to be able to make a proper decision on what colours to use for both these things in my new apartment…I’m nervous that the little samples of carpet you get to look at, and the painting we do with the sample pots of paint won’t be enough for me to make the right decision as to what I really want. We’ve decided to do the painting first, as it won’t matter if any gets on the carpet as it’ll be removed anyway, and then put the new carpet in. I’m nervous we’ll pick the paint colours ok but then no carpet will go with it. We can’t do any of this until we can get into our property after 10 August either, as there are tenants there till then. I’m scared that we’ll have it all done, and then I’ll be like, “Oh crap. I hate it.” But we won’t have any money left over to re-do it! Has anyone actually done this, or does it all tend to work out in the end? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Has anyone ever regretted their choices for paint/carpet? 2May 26, 2008 12:49 pm I am worried about that exact thing, in fact I'm losing sleep over it. It doesn't help that my husband seems to have no opinion on these things and I a responsible for all the decisions! But if it makes you feel better I think everyone goes through the same thing and I'm yet to see a picture of any of the new houses on here that is horrible!! Re: Has anyone ever regretted their choices for paint/carpet? 3May 26, 2008 12:57 pm Advice……… pay a small fee to a colour consultant!
Then say goodbye to all your sleepless nights!!!! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Has anyone ever regretted their choices for paint/carpet? 4May 26, 2008 1:06 pm To be honest Michelle, I don't think that would stop my stressing - I'm one of those people that visits the doctor and still believe his wrong and that I'm dying after I leave!!!!! Basically I can second guess a trained professional just as easily as I can myself! Although, Grace one thing I did learn from reading some of Michelle's posts is that getting professional design and colour help needn't be as expensive as I think alot of us assume, so it may well be a really good option for you! Re: Has anyone ever regretted their choices for paint/carpet? 5May 26, 2008 1:26 pm I'm stressing about it too at the moment! Although I'm lucky that I haven't had the colour appointment and I still have time to decide. My main concern is the kitchen cupboards (stipple cocoa) will clash severely with the spotted gum flooring. Looks great in the bathrooms where there are tiles on the floor, not honey coloured floorboards. I am seriously considering a gloss white 2 pac kitchen, and adding a warmer brown tone with the splashback, as it won't be sitting ontop of the floors.
I'm happy with all of my other colour choices including paint and carpet, as it will go with everything else I have chosen. If someone else chose the colours for me I think I would still have sleepless nights too! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Although i know what floor (spotted gum too) i will be choosing and the house theme is 'white', still thinking what color to go with white as i don't want my house to be too 'white'.. need to go to the gallery again and again for comparison before the final decision is made on the date, i just hope that i can make the right choice Blog - http://clageonewhouse.blogspot.com/ Building Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=10886&hilit=milan I am in, with my husband and my beautiful bunny Re: Has anyone ever regretted their choices for paint/carpet? 7May 26, 2008 1:48 pm Colour consultants have larger samples than what you get to see, and once it is all put together you get a better understanding of your colours!
Then they explain why it will work…..(theory)….or why it won’t work! You are not riding on the seat of your pants wondering “do they go, yes I think they do?” To be honest……if I had to do something that was costing me a lot of money, and I had to look at it EVERY DAY if I got it wrong, I would be calling a professional! When I bought my new Subaru, I researched the car first, 40K was a lot of money to spend, and I needed to know what I was getting, I rang a friend who is a mechanic and he told me everything I needed to know. I think it’s a shame more people don’t use colour consultants when they are having problems. I’ve been told I was the best money spent on projects, and I was also the cheapest amount spent! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Has anyone ever regretted their choices for paint/carpet? 8May 26, 2008 4:05 pm You know...I can definitely see why many people would like to employ a colour/design consultant, but in my circumstances, I KNOW what I want. I know my own tastes and I already know any of these colours would look good together.
It's more a concern to me that they won't look 100% PERFECT, and that the very limited size of colour samples I will have won't be an adequate guide to how I will be seeing it once it's all done. No amount of someone qualified telling me how things will look or how things will work will help me with this concern. I simply have to SEE it at the end to fully know what it'll really look like, and this is why I'm scared - because obviously until we've committed and done it all, I can't possibly see it. I am a Libra, which means I can't make a decision, any decision I do make I fear I'll later regret, and I am a perfectionist that needs to be surrounded by what I consider beautiful things...thus = renovation hell. Re: Has anyone ever regretted their choices for paint/carpet? 9May 26, 2008 4:26 pm absolutely .... i completely screwed up our portico colour and i hate it with a passion.
i changed the door colour at the final variation and asked the PD colour consultant whether the portico colour would still work ... she said yes. i can assure you that it doesn't!!! but at the end of the day, it's only the portico and it only needs painting so it's not like it's the end of the world. but yeah ...it's a horrible feeling and i'm not sure how qualified these consultants are when they do your colour consultation. my tip ... go to somebody like Michelle and pay the fee. it will save money in the long run!! I'm not yet 100% decided on which tone to go for more...pinkish hue or more yellow a hue. Although if I go more pinkish, then the walls would be a more toned down, dusky very pale pink/mauve (not really, it'd be more fawn but with those cool undertones), and in that case the carpet would be a fawn sort of mushroom colour with similar but slightly darker undertones. If we go more yellow or warmer a colour, then the carpet would be more plain fawn/brown/beige, and not so mushroom...if that makes sense. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Has anyone ever regretted their choices for paint/carpet? 11May 26, 2008 5:42 pm Years ago I bought a carpet that I had reservations about in the shop, got talked into it, as soon as it was laid I knew it was wrong. Hated it and saved up like mad to replace it as soon as possible.
DH has never let me live it down, every argument about money comes back to "well you spent $3000 on that carpet for nothing" (15 years ago ) My mum also got talked into things for her kitchen by a very self-opininated sales person " no, you cant have shelves there, it will be too cluttered" " you need a microwave roll down cover to hide the microwave"and moved into kitchen and wished she had shelves for the cook books and never rolls down the cover. I think the moral of the story is to take advice from experts or trusted friends/relatives/interested parties but know what you want and do not be persuaded to buy things against your own gut reactions or personal preferences. Also don't lose too much sleep over every little thing - I often de-stress myself( not just about the house) by reminding myself whats the worst that can happen here - walls can always be painted again, floor coverings changed etc - its not life and death decisions. Re: Has anyone ever regretted their choices for paint/carpet? 12May 26, 2008 5:42 pm 3 looks like hogs bristle which looks great with white trims doesn't look dark at all. Always take into consideration the amount of natural light coming into a room! This makes a lot of difference to a paint colour! A well lit room will wash the paint colour down sometimes x 2 shades! A darker room will make the colour much darker than what you see on the swatch. In some cases I have used a full strength colour in most of the house, then when I get to another room that is darker I will use the same colour but in half strength. So as you view the home from room to room the colour/walls looks the same. Its very hard to give you a nod on any of your chosen colours from not knowing the amount of light you will get, and the furniture you have. But the one I like best is 3, but perhaps a shade lighter for you? Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Has anyone ever regretted their choices for paint/carpet? 15May 26, 2008 8:47 pm Ok, cool, thanks for the advice!
3 isn't Hogs Bristle, but it is similar. A bit warmer, more pinky than yellow/grey-based as far as I can tell. I really like Hogs Bristle though...that is one we'll be getting a sample pot for. I'd be interested to see if maybe in some rooms the full strength and in other rooms the 1/2 strength would work well. I agree that a lighter version of 3 would look really good. We are doing 1/4 strength hog bristle throughout. I was too wary to go full strength in case it was too strong and prefer a lighter backdrop to decorative items anyway. I agree with you ... its hard to make decisions and even though a colour consultant can help, you still need to suck it and see. I can't tell you how many times we've re-painted walls because we decided the colour wasn't right. It really depends on the amount of light coming into a room, orientation, furniture and personal taste. Thats why I usually pick an innocuous flow colour that I can live with and dress it up with feature walls etc. Good luck on finding the right colours. Re: Has anyone ever regretted their choices for paint/carpet? 17May 26, 2008 11:54 pm Coming from one who chose all my colours myself and am happy with them,I found one rule of thumb.....
Having chosen a colour from a chart that seems just right, go about two shades lighter, and it'll be the one. I had a beautiful colour picked from the Dulux chart called 'Ashley Blue'!:D It HAD to be right, right? But getting samples, it was really too strong, and ended up with Sky Boat (same colour but lighter). It is still a fairly strong colour, but with lots of light and high ceilings in an open plan area, it looks great. Other colours in smaller rooms are much softer. So yes, what Mish said is most important (about considering the space and lighting). Carpets? I reckon choose them before your paint colours! Choose carefully! Ash. Re: Has anyone ever regretted their choices for paint/carpet? 18May 27, 2008 10:37 am Good advice there…
Re choosing carpets first, this is possible for us to do, yes, but we have to actually get the painting done before the carpet. Isn’t this generally easier? Cause there won’t be any potential mess on the new carpet from the painting if we do it in that order? Anyway, hmm. I’m curious to see how our (now been reduced to 4) chosen colour possibilities will actually look once painted from the sample pots. They look perfect, if a teeny bit light, on the colour cards, so we’ll see. My partner is always pointing out slightly darker colours, that whilst very nice, would be just way too dark for the walls. All I want is some depth to the walls and some levels of shading (not just all white from ceiling to walls and architraves and skirting and stuff, and then suddenly darker carpet), I don’t actually want dark walls. I keep saying the colours she points out would be perfect for the carpet, not the walls. Lol. Anyway, I have to wait for just over 2 months before we can even do any of this. *impatient sigh* Tenants’ lease expires 10 August, and settlement is going to be between 8-14 August, so finally FINALLY then we can do stuff!!! I want to at least have some sort of idea though about what we want beforehand, as we won’t exactly be rushed but we will be wanting to get all the quotes and then the actual work done within 2 weeks, cause then we move in. So we don’t need to be fiddling around with 50 million decisions about colour at that stage. Thanks again! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing!
