Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 07, 2014 4:45 pm Hi, we want to install a new toilet in our existing bathroom. The waste pipe will need to pass underneath the footings of the brick wall to tap into the waste pipe of toilet next door. There is some possibility that the pipe might need to pass through the footings, won’t know until the floor is opened up. The plumber says coring through the footings to pass the waste pipe is quite okay. I am somewhat concerned! Can anyone with experience confirm that coring through the footings is okay? If so how to seal around the pipe so that the moisture does not get at the steel reinforcing in the foundation? I can’t find the info anywhere. Re: Is it okay to pass waste pipe through footings? 2May 08, 2014 8:17 am I'd be running this past an engineer despite what the plumber says. We have run a 100mm sewer pipe straight through the middle of a footing before as there was no alternative but we were the ones pouring the concrete and thickened up both the footing and steel in the area concerned. I've never done it post build. If it is a standard footing then the steel reo should be towards the bottom and top so core drilling through the centre shouldn't expose any steel. From your experience, would it be a good idea to pump silicone (or any other water repellent compound) in the gap between the pipe and the concrete, to avoid any moisture penetration. Thanks! Re: Is it okay to pass waste pipe through footings? 4May 08, 2014 10:00 am Probably not a bad idea although depending on the actual size the core driller takes out painting the internal surface with a waterproofing membrane or paint before you run the pipe through is probably better. Have you dug down to find out how big the footing is ? Stewie Re: Is it okay to pass waste pipe through footings? 5May 14, 2014 10:43 pm Hi Stewie, sorry for this late reply, had not logged in for a few days! Another plumber I had consulted had suggested treatment by painting the internal surface (I thought he said rustproofing the exposed steel) of the hole. Thanks for your suggestion about painting waterproof membrane. All this is useful information, at this stage have not opened up the floor, just preparing. Have also consulted an engineer. If we find that we need to drill through the footings, he will inspect and advise accordingly before the drilling is carried out. Thanks again for your guidance. If it is, how much room is there between the bottom of the floor joist and the ground below? Stewie yep sounds good make the footing bigger to to allow for the pipe in the middle 3 7296 Hi When it rains in a particular direction water comes through the security door.
