Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 07, 2014 11:39 am Looking at the PLAN drawing, the wife and I disagree over the need for an entrance door to the (3 in 1), toilet, vanity, bathing areas.
The Wife says NO DOOR. HER reasoning: Three people can use the facilities at any one time. ie - someone can use the toilet while someone can uses the vanity while someone else is showering. Privacy while using the vanity is not necessary. I say we definitely need a door. MY reasoning: Nobody wants to see my hairy @rse while I'm shaving as they pass down the hallway! If somebody wants to leave the door open while using the vanity, no problem, people can come and go as they want. If the door is closed, try knocking!! PLEASE VOTE, ITS' THE ONLY WAY... 27 May 2014. THE FINAL SOLUTION - BY AGREEMENT The wife came up with this design which we both agree is the best solution. Thank you to everyone that voted and commented. Re: Bathroom Reno - Disagreement with Wife - Please VOTE 2May 07, 2014 11:43 am If you have a door - at least you have the option to close it! Look at cavity slider if you're not in WA (where brick internal walls would make this option difficult) Re: Bathroom Reno - Disagreement with Wife - Please VOTE 3May 07, 2014 11:55 am no door. Say someone has a mystery lump in a bad place they want to check out in a mirror, do they need to do that in front of the vanities and in front of passabys in the hall? Re: Bathroom Reno - Disagreement with Wife - Please VOTE 6May 07, 2014 1:37 pm My answer really depends on how many other bathrooms you have. I voted no door on the assumption it's a bathroom for children. put a full length mirror on the back of bathing door and you can do all kinds of private stuff in there People make one happy, not houses? I do not think so. Houses are more to be trusted than people. It will also be used for visitors staying over who sometimes have children with them. There is another bathroom at the other end of the house also. You can change your vote mrssnowden... Re: Bathroom Reno - Disagreement with Wife - Please VOTE 8May 07, 2014 2:04 pm If you always keep the vanity spotless, have a shaving cabinet and have powerpoints within the cupboards/cabinet to hide away electric toothbrush, shavers, nose hair trimmers etc (c'mon we all secretly have a set) then there is no need for a door but if you live in the real world rather than a display home you might find you want one. I can already see the flaw in my argument though, even if you do manage to change her mind she will always hate it and blame you. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Bathroom Reno - Disagreement with Wife - Please VOTE 9May 07, 2014 2:10 pm I voted to have the door, but only if its a cavity slider/retractable door as the space can then be opened up if need be and not hindered by the awkwardness of a regular swing open type door in that space. I think having the option to close it over is valid and think that the cavity door will be a good compromise and suit both of you. As every long time married man knows, 'there is no winning...' but, her last throw away line was that if I was so sure everyone would want a door, I should go and ask... so that's what I did! It's also why I put that last option in the POLL. @deluxes - Thanks deluxes. In that space I think a swing door would be excellent. I hate sliding doors; you can't breeze through a sliding door like you can a swing door. We have one on a walk-in-robe for the last 15 years, tedious, and they're noisy too. Re: Bathroom Reno - Disagreement with Wife - Please VOTE 11May 08, 2014 9:07 am I understand your reasoning and would vote for the door. As someone mentioned above, you'll then have the ability to close it. going on your wife's reasoning, how often would you expect to have 3 people at once using the bathroom? Re: Bathroom Reno - Disagreement with Wife - Please VOTE 12May 08, 2014 3:38 pm Used by visitors? Opens off a hallway? Put in a door, no question. That way your guests can stand at the mirror in their towel after a shower and do their teeth, makeup, pick at their face or whatever, without worrying about someone walking past. I'd probably remove the door into the shower/bath area though - pointless if you can close the entire bathroom off. Once you decide to devote a space to use by non family members you need to take into account that the way they will use the space will most likely be very different to how your wife may want to use it. It would be more common for a visitor to want the entire space to themselves so they can go to the toilet, shower, get dressed and do teeth and hair etc before leaving the space. For that, it's more practical to close off the bathroom at the hallway entrance so they can do their thing in private. For family members without concerns as such for privacy, then just leave the door open. Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Handover completed 27/09/2013 and now moved in. Re: Bathroom Reno - Disagreement with Wife - Please VOTE 13May 08, 2014 6:33 pm I voted for a door. I don't like the idea of standing in front of a mirror getting ready (hair, makeup, picking pimples etc) whilst people walk past. If I was a guest it would make me uncomfortable to use the space if I couldn't close the door. If your wife is happy for no door then she can leave it open if/when she uses it Custom downslope build Build thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61873 Blog http://www.buildingroyalmanor.blogspot.com.au Re: Bathroom Reno - Disagreement with Wife - Please VOTE 15May 09, 2014 11:11 am I am currently building a house and have exactly the same bathroom arrangement. Discussions with my wife have resulted in our decision to only install the door jamb now so we can easily install a door later if required. Then you've got your private shaving sink and others can still wash their hands after the loo/brush their teeth away from your hairy self. I quite like the idea of having a "powder" room sink outside the toilet/bathroom myself - thinking ahead to when we've got teenagers hogging the bathroom, one can still brush their teeth. In our place though this would only be shared by the kids, visitors to the house using the loo and the occasional house guest. I wouldn't put the door on if it were my setup but I get what you're saying. IMO if you're going to have a door to the hallway then you don't need a door to the bathroom itself. Having the door to the sink area for privacy kinda defeats the purpose of having a bathroom that can be used by 3 people at once. If someone wants to shower or toilet they're still going to need to go past you. My vote is move a sink Our Custom Dale Alcock build in the Village at Wellard https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=78620 Re: Bathroom Reno - Disagreement with Wife - Please VOTE 20May 09, 2014 2:57 pm Agree - great idea - put a sink in the bathroom For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!!
