Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 05, 2014 3:55 pm Hello Guys, We have two jobs (separate quotes) given by this renovator (he is licensed builder) (a) Laundry reno and (b) bathroom reno. He started work on job#1: 1.5m x 2.8m laundry ...its now a month still on going (fitting wall tiles now), he does not work regular and even on working days he is like max 2-3hrs and his behavior has caused us to lose our faith and trust. He asks for payments well before per his installment plan (eg installment which needs to be paid after all tiles are done – he asked to pay when he started it and he keeps on asking every day). Initially told us this job will take max 2weeks but now after a month its going on.... So we are thinking to give job#2 to some other renovator. As I said above he gave us two quotes for 2 separate jobs and took our signed at bottom of the quote paper. Wondering if there is any problem to us if we go with another renovator? Thanks Re: Sacking a renovator please advice 2May 05, 2014 5:06 pm So Im guessing, with reference to this topic viewtopic.php?f=21&t=70290, that you learned recommendations often dont mean much? Re: Sacking a renovator please advice 3May 05, 2014 5:15 pm yeah, thats what we found out this one is from serviceseek.com.au with some good reviews too. On top of that he said he is doing 3 other renos at same time so not able to give fulltime on this. Re: Sacking a renovator please advice 4May 06, 2014 3:32 pm I would just tell him you won't be needing the second job done. He hasn't started so it shouldn't be a problem. He may try to claim for purchase of materials?? He would have to take you to court and, given the circumstances he wouldn't have a very strong case. I wouldn't want him doing any more work in my place. I often wonder about those sites. They could have friends giving references. Personal recommendations are better, but not always possible. Re: Sacking a renovator please advice 5May 06, 2014 9:04 pm I've tried numerous times on those sites, and so far I've only had 3 ring me, most have emailed me, but never got back to me with a quote. The quotes that I've had back have been ridiculous high or they've never read my request or the plans that I emailed to them correctly. I really think they rely on those who have no idea of what they expect to get, let alone how much their job is really worth. For me, I've only had one for my entire home build so far that has been able to quote accurately what I want at a reasonable price. I will let you know how it works out with him due to start Thursday. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Sacking a renovator please advice 6May 06, 2014 11:28 pm I've heard a lot of bad experiences about tradies sought from such sites. Good tradies have no need to go down that route. A good tradie will usually know another good one in another discipline but people often don't think to ask another tradie if they can recommend someone in a different field. 3in1 Supadiverta. Edited by Homeone Support Team Re: Sacking a renovator please advice 9May 18, 2014 11:03 am Hi there I'm with you - I don't like the sound of him and I wouldn't want him doing my 2nd job. So yes, either just use the angle that you have decided not to get the 2nd job done - you haven't signed a 'building' contract with him, per se - just signed the quote to complete the job as per your specifications (I would assume). If he starts saying he has already outlaid for materials on the next job (which I highly doubt he would have if he is scraping for every cent on the job he is currently working on), then ask him to provide receipts (be careful he doesn't produce receipts from other/previous jobs). If he continues to push this angle and does provide legit receipts, discuss returning the items - or tell him you will pay for those items and he can hand them over to you (at least then you will have them for your next job). Anyway, I doubt you will have any serious issues 'sacking' him, other than him maybe making a song and dance because he might need the work - but perhaps he should think about that and show good work ethic in the first place. Just to be safe however, I would try to document everything you can up to this point, and everything in the future. Ie, from here in, document when he comes to work, how long he stays, and when he asks for money. But retrospectively, try to collate your info too - ie date he started, date he was 'meant to start', anything that might help with a case should he even bother trying to take you court..... which I doubt. Or even to show him as a sign that you have all your info on hand should he wish to take it further. I'm sure once he realises you mean business and you have your side of things sorted, he'll give up pretty quick. But I doubt it will all get to any of that. Good luck, keep us posted.
