Re: Sacking a renovator please advice 9May 18, 2014 11:03 am Hi there I'm with you - I don't like the sound of him and I wouldn't want him doing my 2nd job. So yes, either just use the angle that you have decided not to get the 2nd job done - you haven't signed a 'building' contract with him, per se - just signed the quote to complete the job as per your specifications (I would assume). If he starts saying he has already outlaid for materials on the next job (which I highly doubt he would have if he is scraping for every cent on the job he is currently working on), then ask him to provide receipts (be careful he doesn't produce receipts from other/previous jobs). If he continues to push this angle and does provide legit receipts, discuss returning the items - or tell him you will pay for those items and he can hand them over to you (at least then you will have them for your next job). Anyway, I doubt you will have any serious issues 'sacking' him, other than him maybe making a song and dance because he might need the work - but perhaps he should think about that and show good work ethic in the first place. Just to be safe however, I would try to document everything you can up to this point, and everything in the future. Ie, from here in, document when he comes to work, how long he stays, and when he asks for money. But retrospectively, try to collate your info too - ie date he started, date he was 'meant to start', anything that might help with a case should he even bother trying to take you court..... which I doubt. Or even to show him as a sign that you have all your info on hand should he wish to take it further. I'm sure once he realises you mean business and you have your side of things sorted, he'll give up pretty quick. But I doubt it will all get to any of that. Good luck, keep us posted. You are well within your rights not to get him to continue on. He also CANNOT ask for more than 50% of payment if there is not more that 50% work completed. But legally can ask for 5-10% deposit before any work is started (depending on the total cost of the job) Versaloc is a mortarless besser block system that still needs a properly engineered footing.
