Hi,
Im a 28 year old mechanical engineer who is considering changing career and doing a carpentry/joinery apprenticeship, with the hope of getting into the residential and commercial fields.
I always had a worry that I would not feel satisfied or rewarded with a desk/office type job where I was not using my hands and my concerns have totally been realised during my time as a mechanical engineer. I did woodwork in high school and have always liked it and the idea of working as a carpenter/joiner and actually getting to physically make things, but I have never tried to pursue it and thought I should give it a shot before its too late.
To any carpenters/joiners out there or to anyone who has maybe done something similar to what I am thinking, it would be great to get any of your suggestions, thoughts, insights, etc. What are the main pros and cons of being a carpenter/joiner? Is it as rewarding and satisfying as I am hoping? Any thoughts on the apprenticeship side of things (particularly with regards to ways of getting more money during an apprenticeship)?
Cheers
