Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 01, 2014 7:50 am Hello Guys, There is continuous water flowing from the pipe - which is outside the house just below nature street. Neighbor says he has seen water flowing from few months now (even before we moved into this property). Here is the property plan and water leaking pipe : The diagram shows that the mains supply is at the opposite end of the frontage, so a bit remote for any leak to be coming from there. Appreciate any help in determining it. Anna Re: Urgent : Water Leak Advise 2Apr 01, 2014 11:17 am If you think it's yours. Turn off your water in house and then check metre. It could be a leak either side of metre. Turn your water off at metre - is water still leaking from outlet. Why not seek Council help. They are very conscious of water wastage these days. Re: Urgent : Water Leak Advise 3Apr 01, 2014 12:42 pm Do what Saint Mike suggests above. That is a stormwater outlet, so something is illegally plumbed into it, or it is broken and water is seeping there from somewhere. Does the water smell off, or is it clean? Re: Urgent : Water Leak Advise 5Apr 01, 2014 4:31 pm I'd get it checked. I can't read the metre - but - if its still increasing after you've turned the water off there may be an issue. Sounds odd. You might get the excess water in pipe to flow out - but that shouldn't make the metre work. Maybe give it an hour or so off - but I'd still seek Council input. Re: Urgent : Water Leak Advise 6Apr 02, 2014 12:50 pm If the meter is turned off, and the pipe is still leaking , then its obviously not being fed from a town water which is being delivered past your meter to your taps. There could be many "wierd" possibilities for it. Natural spring? Maybe somethign to do with a neighbour? Council relief valve? What happens When water goes down your downpipes, does it come out there? I would go the the council and ask if there is some sort of relief/flush pipe there on your footpath , in case it is some relief valve tied to the mains water supply. IF it is, they will soon fix it up. In fact they will come out at no charge to inspect their infrastructure it it is suspected of being faulty so show them the photo. If it isn't a council problem, Id still get someone to investigate it.If there is a spring under your house, you'd want to take evasive action for your foundations, esp if on a slab. A stitch in time saves nine. Always investigate irregularities. Re: Urgent : Water Leak Advise 7Apr 02, 2014 1:04 pm Hi thehuntbegins, You have received some good advice here. Getting it checked out is definitely the right thing to do. We had a similar situation next door (not our property). Next door to us is a block of units that had an outlet similar to the one you have shown. There was always a little trickle of water coming out for months. This type of outlet is usually for storm water so should only be connected to downpipes and should only have water coming out after rain. In next door's case they had a series of plumbers come and have a look and unfortunately it took months to resolve. However, they must have eventually found the leak and it is now dry. I would also contact your water supplier as it may be something that is leaking prior to the water getting to your meter. I know that Sydney Water used to do smoke tests on storm water lines to ensure that people weren't connecting storm water to the sewer. This involves running smoke from the kerb outlet and seeing it come out into the air at the gutters. I am not sure if this kind of investigation would assist. Best of luck with it. If you have a spring, maybe you could bottle and sell it Cheers, Jenny. Need hints, tips and inspiration? Join me on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ournewhomecoach Who am I? I'd get your water authority to change the main shutoff tap first which is their responsibility. Anything after the meter is yours. You should be able to find the leak yourself by tracing the pipe back from the kerb and digging a hole in the dirt. Easy. In most cases the pipes are usually less than a foot into the ground. Doing this yourself will save you having to pay a plumber to do it. All they have to do then is patch the hole in the pipe or replace a faulty fitting. Replacing the main shutoff tap first makes it easier for the plumber to solder the pipe. Have you been under the house to check if the wter leak is originating there? Stewie Re: Urgent : Water Leak Advise 10Apr 18, 2014 5:38 pm Stewie D The leak is coming from your side of the meter which is why it is still ticking over. Stewie The OP is feeding us red herrings then. This is what they said above "We turned off water in house and then checked meter. Turned water off at metre - and noticed water is still leaking from outlet" plus an apparent 1/10th litre reading increase. If they had turned off the meter properly, you cannot have water going thru it. So whats going on? The OPs troubleshooting methods are flawed. So first thing, is the water meter faulty with respect to its shut off valve? Sort that out , then troubleshoot again. Re: Urgent : Water Leak Advise 11Jul 22, 2014 3:11 pm Hi Guys, Thanks a lot for your response on this issue. Sorry we were away so couldn't respond to this thread for long. Today we called a plumber and he said they can do some hydrogen - leak detection test which will cost appro $450 for test and additional $ to fix it depending on where/how bad the leak is. $450 for a test 1) Should we be first check with Council if this leak is from council side? 2) If I have understood it correctly, we have two issues here : (a) water leak thru storm water pipe (b) faulty meter which keeps on adding units even if the mains supply is OFF and no water usage during that offtime? Please help us bit more to sort this out and comment on above 2 points. Anna and Glen Re: Urgent : Water Leak Advise 12Jul 22, 2014 3:36 pm The photo shows a stormwater drain pipe. This has nothing to do with the mains water. There possibly could be an ag pipe plumbed into the stormwater pipe. The pipe may also be cracked. Either way, nothing to worry about. $450 for a test? You could have a camera run up the pipe for maybe $220-250 for a simple job. If the pipe is cracked and tree roots are starting to ingress, you would then need a repair. NOTE: If you want answers, you need to post all relevant information. For example, the drain pipe may also service the discharge from an evaporative air conditioner and/or a solar hot water service. We also don't know whether you are connected to stormwater drainage. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Cleaner Neater Smarter Cheaper Supa Gutter Pumper. Re: Urgent : Water Leak Advise 15Jul 22, 2014 7:36 pm SaveH2O Do you know what ag pipe is? Sorry, not sure really. Re: Urgent : Water Leak Advise 16Jul 22, 2014 11:06 pm Ag pipe is an abbreviation of agricultural pipe. It is slotted so that sub surface water can drain into it. Some have a fabric covering to prevent silt entering the pipe but they all need to be covered with blue metal, scoria or similar so that the water can drain to them. http://www.landscapesupplies.com.au/ag-pipe.html To find out if an ag pipe drains to the stormwater pipe, you would need to (carefully) dig down and follow the stormwater pipe. If you meet some scoria or similar, there will probably be an ag pipe there. As an educated guess, I would think that you do have a normal stormwater system (not stated) and that the pipe outlet shown only connects to a separate ag pipe but without being on site, I can only guess. It would help to know the pipe's path in case you want to do any digging. Apart from that, don't worry about it. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Re: Urgent : Water Leak Advise 17Aug 11, 2014 3:34 pm Hi Guys, There is a leak detector (something like a small dialer) on the meter, the manual says if we turn off the water taps inside home (keeping main water tab outside home to ON state) and if the dialer still moves then there is a leak inside house. 1> In our case the dialer is moving so that confirms 100% water leak without house? 2> On side note I was thinking...may be just turnign off taps is not really shutting off water supply usage in house....we might have something else like swimming pool, solar water heater etc which might be moving that dailer? so my Q is ...How to make sure that there water supply usage in house is totally shutdown? Thanks Glen and Anna Re: Urgent : Water Leak Advise 18Sep 15, 2014 3:04 pm We have engaged Council and Sydney water and this is update from Council : --- Council has been investigated the water running through the kerb outlet and identified that the water runs also at dry day or sunny day condition without any rain. Council also contacted with Sydney Water to investigate the cause of continuous water runs along kerb outlet. The Sydney Water have been investigated and identified that the leakage is domestic water connection in between water meter and connection with house within the property. The result (of water sample test by Sydney Water) shows that the continuous flowing water through kerb outlet is tap water from your property. So Council is unable to fix any underground pipe leakage inside your property. Please try to engage your private plumber and fix the leakage by your own cost. --------- thanks Chippy, i hope they have applied sealer but i am doubt to be honest, so i am gonna do this job after handover. 8 16227 If you make sure all taps inside and out are turned off, what does the water meter show if you leave it for a while. 2 20229 Hi all, I am hoping someone has some ideas as to what is causing my bathroom leak.
