Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 13, 2014 9:36 pm Hi, I believe I saw a thread previously where people were reviewing each others designs and sugest improvements or point out flaws, however I can't find it so I opened a new one. We are planning on building a single storey house right in the middle of a 14 acre property on top of a hill and we have come up with the following design. A bit more info: We have 3 young kids and they will get a bedroom each I will need to work from home, therefore an office is included Other than that, all the usual All feedback is welcome. We're in WA (so could be quite different) but it's recommended here that bedrooms be on the Southern side to reduce the need for cooling. Re: Any feedback on our design 3Mar 13, 2014 10:28 pm Lovely plan, love the massive veranda although be aware the big verandah will likely stop any winter sun from getting in your living areas. Only other thought is that the minor bedroom hallway is going to be terribly dark. I wonder if a sliding cavity door out to the rumpus would be better because surely it'll be mostly open? Anyway, minor points. Looks great! With your garage coming in on the side like that it might be worthwhile considering a little portico or something over the front door. Although we have views in all directions, the best is East and North (nice for master). The minor bedrooms also double as a study for when the kids get a bit older. Better to have a view over the valley than the pool and cubbyhouse which will be on the other side of the house. @EmyN We don't expect the sun to be a major issue. Early morning sun should still make it and at midday we don't really need it (I hope). We are building in northern NSW. As we are on a bit of altitude, the nights can get pretty cold but during the day is is generally quite nice. Great pick up on the hallway being dark and the door. We have changed the door to slider and will consider adding solartube skylights. As for the front door, we don't really plan to have one. The main entry will be next to the kitchen and we will pave a path towards it. BTW, the driveway will come up from the West. @TinaG We did have a closed of room for exactly that reason but we dropped as it impeded too much on the view. We should now have great views from pretty much anywhere in the living areas. Re: Any feedback on our design 7Mar 14, 2014 11:47 am Great design and well transitioned from the old ranch style homes. The ensuite looks a little pokey. Is there a way you can lose a little on the bedroom/robe to gain a bit in there. Nothing worse that trying to squezze past the Mrs whilst she's doing her makeup...
