Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 26, 2019 12:49 pm Hi everyone, We have just finished our 3rd set of working drawings and are about to proceed to engineering again, then i had a thought on whether we could accommodate a theater room in our current floor plans. As you can imagine the wife's not too happy, so before i end up on the back of a milk carton, i need some advice please! This is my current family, kitchen and meals area, Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is my idea: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The meals area now becomes a home theatre. The red circle is my issue. This is located on the outside, dont think it will work too well with the roof line? Do you think the changes are positive? or should i leave it the way it is? Would love some opinions, thanks Re: Need some advice please! Before it costs me more money 2Sep 26, 2019 1:43 pm I think the meals room looks too small to feel like a decent home theatre. Do you plan to have a TV in your family room? And if so do you really need 2 TVs so close to eachother? Regarding the roof line, I agree that maintaining a good roof line is important. If possible try to use the space for storage or internal storage so the roof line is clean. Re: Need some advice please! I do plan to have a tv in the family room. I like the internal storage idea Re: Need some advice please! Before it costs me more money 6Sep 26, 2019 3:13 pm I think I like your general ideas here. This is just some of my own 'thinking out loud'....

Cheers Thanks for the feedback, would you keep the external wall of the house straight? Re: Need some advice please! Before it costs me more money 10Sep 26, 2019 4:55 pm I like what Amilelka is thinking, as it doesn't take much glazing to get some decent light in. This next one is a bit radical, but keeping the same basic building envelope, and just swapping rooms around, you could have your main living areas all exposed to north sun. I would even consider having no roof on the Alfresco and setup as a courtyard, then swap BED4 over the hallway (likely a spare room anyhow?). This gives north light also to the theatre room. The problem I see with you original design is not only getting light into your kitchen/dining, but having that large shaded Alfresco limits light/warmth in as well. Anyhow here is a rough sketch just in PSP: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ --------------------------------------------------------------------- Check our Homeone build blog here Re: Need some advice please! Before it costs me more money 13Sep 26, 2019 5:20 pm No worries Peter83, there are some negatives to what I have shown, mostly a longer main hallway. But if you read our own building blog from the start, you will see we essentially rotated our main living area 90deg to expose them all the north sun. Not sure what climate zone you are in, but in cold Ballarat (VIC) this is a terrific design and so far when we visit the house we are so happy with how much light and warmth this whole zone receives. Our hallway is 1200mm wide, and if I had my time again I could have taken 100mm out of side and give it to the hallway....but honestly 1200 is ok. Our block widened towards the rear, so we could easily add a long WIP behind the kitchen which works well. But with your's I am just keeping the main building envelope the same, and just swapping things around. You need to ask yourself realistically how much use and benefit you will get from both a theatre room (carpeted - which isn't as good thermally) and an external Alfresco using up all that previous natural sunlight? Also if you keep the same footprint, it isn't difficult for the designer to swap rooms around. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Check our Homeone build blog here Re: Need some advice please! Before it costs me more money 14Sep 26, 2019 5:23 pm Can you tell me also what is the total width of your house at that rear section? I can then advise on how it will potentially work attempting to run kitchen, dining and living in the one line. Also don't discount the effectiveness of courtyards. They offer great wind protection and give north sun to an extra room. Check out the great design that Hillsbuilds are doing currently. They have a courtyard setup that should work really well. Actually I think Amilelka is doing a courtyard as well? --------------------------------------------------------------------- Check our Homeone build blog here Re: Need some advice please! Actually I think Amilelka is doing a courtyard as well? Regarding your previous post, we’re in Melbourne, future build on north eastern suburbs. Not too many dimensions given but hallway is currently 1500mm Current plan rear width is 10,400mm approx, my changes increases it to 12,400mm approx Thank you so much for the effort. We will use it to talk with builder.
