Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 02, 2014 4:59 pm Hi All, We are up to colour selections for the exterior of the home (brick, render, windows, eaves, etc.) and are a bit overwhelmed as to the amount of selection we have. The design consists of a 2 storey home with a skillion roof, ground level is brick, upper level is cladding and render. We are trying to keep our selection to lighter colours (surfmist colourbond roof) and avoid dark coloured brick due to possible heat gain in summer. What interests us is a dark blue (almost navy) type brick which will fit in with the demographic of the area and seems to blend in well with many other colours. Can anyone recommend websites or software where you can colour coordinate the look of your home? Anyone know the heat/solar gain difference between a light coloured, brown and dark coloured brick. Is there really much difference? Re: Selecting colours 2Feb 02, 2014 6:27 pm Hi, The Boral Sampler website is alright for doing external, but it is for Boral products only. http://boralsampler.com.au/ As for color choices, your lighter colors will always conduct less heat. A pure black roof i would stick well clear of, but if you have sarking and roof insulation then a darker color may be alright. I'm sure someone else in here may have a more definitive answer on this. Re: Selecting colours 5Feb 02, 2014 9:27 pm Thanks Sanna, Will check it out! The brick i was looking at was Aubergine by PGH Bricks, like i said above its a dark brick, but with a white flush grout i think it will suit the house. http://www.pghbricks.com.au/Bricks/Show_150.aspx But i dont want create an oven on the other hand. Surely brown is a dark colour and would have similar heat transfer as a darker coloured brick? Didn't you just say you wanted to avoid dark colours? Bit confused. Yes we WANT to avoid dark colours, not rule them out completely. If lets say for example, the thermal heat absorption difference between a "brown" brick and a "silver blue" brick is only 10% more i think we would investigate more towards a darker brick. I personally thought brown was a dark colour for brick, look around there are hundreds of thousands of homes out there! Was their choice based on creating a comfortable home or one that looked nice (in its day)?. We are upgrading our insulation in the walls and the roof, we don't want to negatively impact the home for the appearance. The home is being built in Melbourne, we experience 5 seasons in a day but our summers can really heat up. Re: Selecting colours 8Mar 26, 2014 4:55 pm I went through this process a while back and it wasn't easy. I initially liked a particular Boral brick and was given a list by the Boral reps of houses that used that brick; but I didn't like any of the houses! The overall colour schemes that were being used with that brick looked old fashioned. Eventually ... by looking at alternatives and driving past houses that I did like, I settled on a darker, brown brick and then chose roof tiles, gutters/fascias and garage door accordingly. It might not be perfect (nothing is) but at least I know I put in the work. Re: Selecting colours 9Mar 27, 2014 11:31 am We drove around through many new estates to see what colours we liked, and what colours we didn't. Profiles with larger corrugations can greatly change the appearance of the color in different… 0 3385 I'd get the gutters to match your roof and pipes to match the paint - otherwise they become a feature. Nice pick with the paint colours! 1 34271 |
