Can understand if you have space limitations, but don't underestimate a decent laundry with direct access to a yard - in fact also install another toilet in the same area as well. I also installed a laundry chute from the upper level, direct down to the laundry. Would you rather iron in some dingy cold room or in the living area. You cupboard laundry has to be big enought to have a lundry basket and hang clothes that need drying or ironing. This way the mess is in the cupboard but you're in the living area. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Laundry in a cupboard? 27May 18, 2008 7:17 pm One thing I have learned is that some ppl prefer the luxurious laundry (like my mum) and others like the laundry in the cupboard idea.
Goes to show that there is a need for both to suit preferences and habits. My auntie hangs her DH tshirts on the line on a coat hanger and then puts them straight into the closet once they are dry. No hanging on pegs, taking off line, folding, ironing out peg marks then hanging in cupboard. I think she is on to something . My mum would have a heart attack if she saw me do it . Re: Laundry in a cupboard? 28May 18, 2008 8:31 pm There's been no ironing in our house for several years. We do have an iron somewhere though, just in case.
The only things which come close to needing an iron are some business shirts I have when I need to front up to captains of industry in a meeting. But the secret there is to never machine-dry them. Go straight from the machine to a line. Once a shirt has been machine dryed it will forever afterwards need to be ironed. Funnily enough I picked that up from the wife of a now long-gone CEO. She never ironed a shirt for him either. Do the hard jobs first. I think for adults they are fine, children making more mess maybe an issue, but given the size of the houses i have experienced i think they are ******* great. for example a small unit i had last putting the laundry in a cupboard made the meals area big enough to be usable and meant you could go into the backyard with out walking past my dirty undies!! As for the ironing, i would do it in the lounge anyway its boring why would i want to go into a boring cube room painted white ... anything to make it easier. Re: Laundry in a cupboard? 31May 18, 2008 9:54 pm Ironing is the devil
My mother irons EVERYTHING. I only iron when I absolutely need to - and usually then it's in the lounge with a good show on TV. Dana -------------------------- Building with DFH - carpet installed! I have a thing about ironing. I remember ironing a crushed silk fru fru ballgown when I was 17 for my first ball. I burnt a huge scorch mark in the fabric 15 minutes before we were due to leave. My bf's mother unstitched the bodice, turned it back to front, and stitched it back on. What a gem. My screeches still echo in my head. Best excuse I've ever had for declining to iron . In my defense I never took home ec at school . Re: Laundry in a cupboard? 33May 19, 2008 8:38 am Thanks thats so me!!! Cabinfever There's been no ironing in our house for several years. Once a shirt has been machine dryed it will forever afterwards need to be ironed. Do you mean do not spin dry them? Are all you people walking around wrinkled?? I once decided to cut back and not iron the kids singlets...Then they had a sleepover at MIL's and I had an acute panic attack that someone would see the wrinkles!! I went back to ironing them Paula Re: Laundry in a cupboard? 35May 19, 2008 10:34 am By "machine dry" I mean those tumble dryers. Once you tumble-dry something it seems to make some subtle change in the fabric.
For shirts, or things that you would naturally think "that just *has* to be ironed" then you need to avoid spin drying them in the washing machine. Just hang them up somewhere dripping. I guarantee that they will then always look as if they've been freshly ironed. But spin or tumble them just once and forever doomed to iron you will be. Just take a moment to consider the equation of work with this. For the "convenience" of spin and tumble drying you then absolutely must spend your time ironing these clothes. Surely any "convenience" has now been lost ? But spend a much smaller amount of time to hang them wet and allow to dry in the fresh air, and you can pack up the iron. And remember only the most "crinkly" items need to avoid the spin cycle; most items just need to avoid the tumble dryer. Do the hard jobs first. Its hard enough to get things dry in Melbourne let alone trying to dry them from dripping wet!! Mmm you have me thinking, I would need to buy more clothes to wear if I had to wait so long for them to dry Paula Re: Laundry in a cupboard? 37May 19, 2008 1:31 pm Paula Are all you people walking around wrinkled?? Re: Laundry in a cupboard? 39May 19, 2008 7:42 pm wouldn't the singlets get crinkled in their sleep anyway?
DH always ironed his own shirts when he worked in an office. I never offered to take over. Comes of moving out of home at 18 I guess. I try and wear things that don;t need ironing and only buy special occasion items that need ironing not my work things when i can. hmm we've been in this house since January and the only thing I've ironed was some wax paper with flowers between the sheets just before Mother's day for a craft activity for my students to use.
