Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 18, 2014 8:17 pm Hi everyone, if anyone has built a black brick home can you put up some pictures, apparently black bricks are fairly new, so haven't seen many homes built in black, I'm liking the Austral "graphite or Zinc" but I'd like to see any black brick build and what colour roof, gutters ect you matched with the black bricks! Do you think black brick homes would get hotter than other coloured bricks , we are having refrigerated air con in our new home! Sorry if that is a stupid question? But some say black attracts the heat! thank you Re: Black brick build????? 2Jan 18, 2014 8:42 pm Yes black is going to get hotter. It will absorb heat like crazy. If you live in a hot climate, personally I think you'd be completely mad to contemplate dark brick. Or dark roof. Google black brick houses for images and there seems to be a fair few. Re: Black brick build????? 4Jan 18, 2014 8:50 pm http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/solar ... _1568.html Fraction of incident radiation absorbed - red brick 55%, blue brick (ie. Close to a grey/black) 89%. Over 50% more absorbance. Re: Black brick build????? 6Jan 18, 2014 9:35 pm It would be every neighbours worst nightmare and good luck trying to sell it. Ever heard of the Heat Island Effect? There was a case a couple of years ago where a guy painted his house black over a dispute with a council and I think (but not too sure) that he was made to repaint it. Pretty sure that it was in Australia. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Cleaner Neater Smarter Cheaper Supa Gutter Pumper. Could not have put it any better. Just go for a "normal" colour (yeah, but what's normal ) and forget about it. Soon enough, you will be thankful your lucky stars that your loyal h1 people managed to talk you out of it Plus, it's likely that what you like now would change some time in the future, so go for a "safer" option. Was this enough of persuasion, or should I go on?? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Black brick build????? 8Jan 19, 2014 11:32 am Dark bricks seems to be the "in" colour in Sydney at the moment. Can't quote %'s but lots of houses in the new estates are being built with dark bricks. Maybe I'm crazy but I'm going with PGH "Espresso" and a "Monument" roof myself. Re: Black brick build????? 9Jan 19, 2014 11:52 am ok !! People you did it you have hubby and I on side we haven't even thought about re sell So back to the drawing board! we went for a drive yesterday didn't see one black/ dark grey home over this side! Re: Black brick build????? 11Jan 19, 2014 2:08 pm I have seen quite a few homes in the new estates with dark/black bricks and dark roof tiles. I don't mind the look but your cooling costs would be much higher. ^ SaveH20 - I don't mind the 2nd house haha Researching a build in South Australia from Sydney. Re: Black brick build????? 12Jan 19, 2014 5:44 pm Hi all after much consideration you will be pleased to know we are going with a brick called Eaglemont!!! We went to the brick display today, and checked out all the bricks and found that the Black and dark Bricks look quite gloomy on a large scale, we also did a drive by to a couple of homes in Lynbrook., and the Black brick homes stand out, amongst the other colours to much for our liking. Thank you all for your advise, Re: Black brick build????? 14Jan 20, 2014 9:00 am Lex Great .... but ... what colour is the Eaglemont?? looks good: http://www.boral.com.au/productcatalogue/product.aspx?product=2947 Re: Black brick build????? 20Mar 02, 2014 7:33 am I don't have to live with it or think about any of the effects, but based on the image, I like the colour. Yes it might stand out - and yes it might appear harsh on face value - but I reckon with the right roofing and trims - and with lots of lovely soft landscaping (ie plants), it would soften the overall look. Greenery would look fab against it as a contrast. As for it being hotter - yes, it definitely would and this is where the total downfall of the colour ******. But again, it depending on your aspect, shading and roof colour, you could minimise the heat absorption as best as possible. For eg on the North and West walls you could shade and plant as best as possible. And, don't forget, in Melbourne, yes you have a heatwave maybe once or twice a summer - we have our aircon on a few days here and there over summer - but in winter have our heater on every day - so it might even pay off in winter. Or the extra days you would require the air con on in summer would compensate for maybe less heating in winter?? Not sure on that one to be honest. Anyway, I'm not trying to talk you into it - as I said, I say all of this without really thinking about whether I would chose it or not if I had the choice and maybe if I researched it more I would find that it is a totally ridiculous colour - and you have already decided on your colour.... I'm just throwing in a different opinion . Cheers The warning is on the sticker on the door too. Second the aluminium powdercoat 6 18203 Thankyou for your advice.
