Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 06, 2014 7:38 pm We have rats in the roof. I was going to put some rat poison containing brodifacoum up there. I have heard that this makes the rats thirsty (as a side effect) so as they are in the process of dying they leave the roof before expiring. I was wondering if anyone had had any experience with this (not keen to have dead rats in a wall cavity/roof. Re: Rats in roof 2Jan 06, 2014 7:59 pm I have used it a couple of times without problems when we lived in an old rural house and got rats in the roof. Not sure where the rats went but I never found them. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Rats in roof 3Jan 06, 2014 9:11 pm Just make sure they are rats and not the small ringtail possums which kinda make the same sorts of sounds up there. With rats ( plus my educated and generously sized nose ) I can smell the difference - rats have no bladder control and generally leave a urine smell wherever they are whereas if you didn't see or hear the possums you wouldn't know they were there. Stewie Re: Rats in roof 5Jan 07, 2014 8:41 am We had them in the roof of a rental property a few years back, the property backced very close to a gully, so it was no surprise when they "moved in". I am terrified/disgusted by them, so my husband had to work el quicko, otherwise I was moving out! We used the Ratsak sachets (just bought from Bunnings) and scattered them in the roof, a few traps and as it was a rental the Landlord was happy to get a Pest Controller out as well to check entry points, place those black plastic things along walls where they run close to - they walk through it like a tunnel and there's baits on a wheel. We found 2 in traps and the scratching stoped 2-3 days after the baits were laid. Then we laid napthalene/moth ball sachets up there - no issues the following winter. We still laid precautionary baits, just in case. FYI - They HATE the smell of peppermint oil. If you know where they are tracking, pop some down. As well as Moth balls/napthalene - our shed is full of moth ball sachets and we never have pest issues (and we live in a country town now). I also have weep guards on all the weep holes in the brick veneer and every crevice is stuffed with steel wool and expanda foam. I figure as much prevention as possible is the best route! No intruders yet... Stewie Disagree. Possums will dump urine in their own sleeping area. They dont go outside for toilet breaks. Anyhting that pees and poos in your ceiling is worth removing. No intruders yet... Sounds good. We live in the wheatbelt (and it's mouse season hurrah? ) and we're doing/have done similar - mesh over all the air vents/weep guards, tinfoil and steel wool in the gaps of the floorboards/skirtings etc - all good preventative stuff to know. We also are using reusable mouse traps (because we catch more than two a day - some times six! EVERY day. For months) We're not using baits right now (small children crawling everywhere) but will return to those in the future. One thing to keep in mind is secondary poisoning - if you poison the rats/mice and have pets then you have to make sure your pets don't find them before you do. 2 9448 This certainly doesn't look good.
