Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 06, 2014 1:58 pm Hi my partner and i are on the path to a change of lifestyle to align with our passion for horses and outdoors. We are moving to Launceston on a 3.5 acre block in approximately 12 months time. We had planned to build a 3 bedroom home before moving but feeling our time will be running thin and also the financial situation would be stretched. We are investigating Building a Shed to Class 1 building standards and using it as a 2 bedroom home until we get ourselves based in our new area. Moving to a shed that is well insulated with an open plan and 2 bedrooms would make a great difference to our 1 bedroom Sydney apartment at the moment. I know there has been many discussions on people living in sheds while knock down and rebuilds take place but how about before anything is built on the property. So Has anyone done it by building a shed meeting the building codes to live in then later convert it back to a shed or office space in the following years? I would like to hear about experiences of anyone who has or is living in a shed. What did it cost you? Was it reasonable. With the Tas first builders grant at $30k it would build a decent shed to start with if it met the criteria. Cheers Adrian Re: Building a Shed to Live in for a few years. 2Jan 12, 2014 6:16 pm Hi, my sister her husband and their twins built a huge barn shed, to live in while their home was being built, it took well over 12 months for their home to finish and managed quite well in the barn/ shed. They bought a second hand kitchen off eBay and knocked it up in the barn , they got a old caravan and parked it to one side for bedrooms and lived with carpet on the barn floor , open living lounge and hired porta toilet. The shed had water tap so they plumbed the kitchen and washing machine ect the biggest problem is heating? However my sister lived in Qld so for her it wasn't really a issue, if you spend your first home owners grant on this shed you would want to make sure you can justify it's worth when your actual home is built.$30,000 is a lot for a shed , Re: Building a Shed to Live in for a few years. 3Jan 12, 2014 7:33 pm hate to put a spanner in the works but have you checked that the council will allow you to live in the shed? not all councils will allow this or will only allow it as a weekender and it might depend on the land zoning. We are special residential /rural and weren't allowed to here being on the edge of town( 3/4 of an acre) but friend in a neighbouring town ( again on edge of town) with the same council on 5 acres were allowed to live in their shed while building. I know somwtimes it's a matter of having to submit proof that a building has started before they'll let you live in the shed. Had friends many years ago live in a shed while they built out in a rural area over a number of years. ( he handmade all the bricks for their house) and other friends lived on their block in a rural location whilst project builder built their house. It's certainly something I'd consider although my OH wouldn't. Caravan for sleeping next to shed for living would def be easier. . Re: Building a Shed to Live in for a few years. 4Jan 12, 2014 8:54 pm Kexkez is absolutely correct , some councils are very strict and your shed will have to pass certain standards! My sister had a few unwanted visitors in her home/shed, the slithering kind with no legs! Re: Building a Shed to Live in for a few years. 5Jan 12, 2014 9:50 pm If you plan on living in a shed, the councils that will allow it generally require it to have shower, toilet, food preparation area, all with running water and waste to a set standard. Also, chances are is that they won't allow it to happen on blocks below a certain size, hence the reason why you only hear about these happening on often 5+acres upwards. Not saying it won't happen on a 1 acre block though. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Blog : http://bandlnewhomebuild.blogspot.com H1 thread : viewtopic.php?f=38&t=68283 .
