Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 22, 2013 9:29 am HI folks We are at the final stages of having our ensuite redone (not 'renovated' as it is being done to fix a leak ). Anyway, all along, our bathroom guy has suggested/recommended that we use a reputable shower screen company to measure and fit the shower screen - so that is what we had planned to do. But now that we are getting to that point and I have started enquiring as to the cost - I think I want to explore my options a bit better. Our shower is in the corner (two tiled walls) and will have two glass walls - one with a door. Base of shower is tiled/walk in. Not hobbed or recessed - just sloping tiles. I want a frameless shower screen (or as frameless as possible). "Reputable" shower screen mob will be approx. $2300 (or so my builder tells me - but we have not yet had the quote) for a 10mm toughened glass shower screen. That is approx. and not sure if it includes the installation. However, the other day I was at a cheapo import bathroom place picking up a towel rail - and one thing led to another and she gave me a quote of $800 (and something) for a 10mm toughened glass shower screen - installed. I am more than keen to save over $1000 bucks. And friends we had for dinner last night said they bought a shower screen off ebay and just made sure that it was levelled properly at fitting stage by using the silicone etc to level it out if/where necessary. Obviously we will need to get hold of a decent spirit level to see how far our walls may be out - if at all (but it is an old house - and the wall opposite was out - bathroom guy had to install the cupboard slightly 'off plumb' to make it appear level with the wall). But if it isn't too much - can it all be adjusted when fitting??. Or should we go the path of having it all properly measured and fitted?? Given what we have been through, we don't want any leaks - but also don't want to spend money we don't need to (we have had a financial hiccup lately so any savings are all welcomed here - without making bad choices if possible). ETA : and I should add, my bathroom guy said that the shower screen people would form a kind of 'lip' across the area where the door would go - just to eliminate some of the water running out of the cubicle when the door is open (or closed, for that matter). So obviously if we purchased from elsewhere, this might not be taken care of. Not sure how important it is. As I said, screen is intended to be frameless so there won't be a metal strip along the bottom. Any advice appreciated. (If I've left out any info relevant to your answer - just ask). HHCIB Re: Shower screen - custom made Vs standard purchase 2Dec 22, 2013 1:44 pm Hi you might find what you need from the Bathroom and Laundry forum - here is an extract from this thread -Walk in (open) shower -. http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=68544 Liliana We didn't have our glass screen put in by a building company. We got it from Stegbar who also installed it in December 2012. Exact cost - $880 for a 2000 by 850 10mm frameless screen with channel. Re: Shower screen - custom made Vs standard purchase 3Dec 24, 2013 8:22 am Thanks Lourance - I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Stegbar was/is the company that we have been advised would be over $2000. I called them yesterday for a rough quote. Frameless they were unable to give a rough price because they said too many factors come into play but said they start at $1500 and go up to $4000. Semi frameless they said could be around $800 (maybe your quoted poster was referring to semiframeless?? Or maybe she only had one screen - we need two - including a door. Anyway, so this goes back to my question - do I want to spend over $2000 on a custom measured/made/fitted screen - or can I get almost just as good (ie, no real problems otherwise) to go with an 'off the shelf' cheaper import. Only difference being not measured to the exact measurement?????? Anyone else have any thoughts on this? HHCIB Your shower screen has failed in the way it is designed to fail with tempered glass. You could replace it with laminated safety glass but make sure it has AS standards logo on it 1 11161 i imagine you also have another contract with an architect? and yeah, whatever other's said about special conditions and appendices 16 15980 Brass or 2) Stainless steel made - which Kitchen tap is good for drinking.Brass kitchen taps in Australia contain lead… 0 6714 |
