Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 17, 2013 1:54 pm Hi, We are doing a knock down rebuild and during these early stages have been going along positioning our house in a similar way to our existing house. I am now wondering if we are making a mistake and should be flipping the house. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I would love peoples thoughts and opinions on this. Thanks, Kim Re: Advice on orientation of house on our block 2Dec 17, 2013 3:12 pm Yes, I would flip the house. Alfresco and living areas on the "North" or as much as possible has my preference. I would push the house as far to the left as possible as well.
Re: Advice on orientation of house on our block 3Dec 17, 2013 3:46 pm I agree too. You'd end up with your alfresco and other living area at the back protected a lot more from the hot westerly sun in summer as well as getting nice morning sun straight into the family room in winter. Stewie Re: Advice on orientation of house on our block 4Dec 27, 2013 12:06 am If it was me I'd be changing the angle even more so your living areas are even more oriented towards north. Having said that I wouldn't be making that decision without first consulting with architects who understand all the implications of energy efficiency in regards to orientation as well as what is important to you in how you live. I recently had discussions with these architects: http://www.ts4.com.au/ They specialise in low and zero energy residential house design. They were great and extremely knowledgable. Re: Advice on orientation of house on our block 5Dec 27, 2013 3:15 pm I would position all living areas to north and have no windows to the west if possible. I think to do that you might need to reconsider the whole design. you need to consider breezes, overhangs, etc too. It is worth spending some money now to do this as you will save a motza on heating and cooling in the long run.
