Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 16, 2013 6:08 pm Hi folks We are in the process of having our ensuite bathroom 'done'. Tiling is about 1/4 complete but my tiler is coming back tomorrow and has a question which we need to confirm with him tomorrow.... We are having a mirror behind our vanity (not a recessed mirror cabinet - just a plain Stegbar mirror). Question is - do we put the mirror straight onto the cement sheeting and have it sit level-ish with the wall tiles. - Or - have the wall completely tiled and sit the mirror on top of the tiles. Our bathroom guy is fantastic - old school - does a good job. But - he mostly does work in a lot of the older, traditional homes (tesselated tiles, type of thing) so I can't necessarily trust his advice when it comes to 'trends' (for eg, he told us most people prefer bevilled edge mirrors but I disagree on that front - or - accept that his clients may mostly want that look but that is not the look we want). He says best thing is to recess the mirror so it sits flush(ish) with the tiles, but I can't help but wonder if we should tile completely behind and sit the mirror on top????? Any input on what is 'the trend' or the best way to go on this. The 'pro' of tiling behind, is the fact that this sits against my son's bedroom so an extra layer (ie tiles etc) would be handy, rather than the mirror sitting straight onto the cement sheeting. But... just want to hear what you good folk have to say on what either 'the trend' is or the best finished look - or what you have done in your bathroom. As I said, not mirrored vanity cupboards - just a plain mirror. Cheers for any urgent input. As I said, have to decide by first thing tomorrow. HHCIB Re: ** Urgent Mirror/Bathroom Help please ** 2Dec 16, 2013 8:35 pm I went to a house open for inspection last year. Beautifully built, minimalist style - their bathroom was tiled floor to ceiling with bathroom mirror recessed so it sat flush with tiles. Obviously you need to have the tiles and mirror EXACT same thickness for it to work otherwise it will look NQR but it looked really slick.

Looks like it is floating Not sure what the trend is but it is what our designer suggested. Re: ** Urgent Mirror/Bathroom Help please ** 5Dec 16, 2013 11:19 pm We're having floor to ceiling tiling and are tiling behind our mirrors on the recommendation of our builder. We did wonder about the point of this (especially given the extra cost!). We were told that the advantage to this is that it avoids mould growing behind the mirror if it gets wet behind there. If you choose a good mob to supply and install your mirror, they will ensure the fit is right both on terms of size and depth. Getting it wrong though just looks like you've tried to save yourself some tiles. The space around the mirror needs to the same as the grout and the mirror depth match the tiles exactly for it to really work. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: ** Urgent Mirror/Bathroom Help please ** 8Dec 17, 2013 9:04 am We had this same dilemma Tile behind: - can always change the mirror later (not likely) - no issues with dust or mould from an unfinished wall surface - will cost a little extra - I personally prefer this look as I am yet to see no tiles behind done well, always look cheap with the mirror recessed to me Soooooo we decided we wanted to tile behind. Our mirrors are massive so we used cheap tiles behind the mirrors. Looks awful until the mirrors go on but once on who would know we were expecting the mirror to then be "stuck" to the tiles so it was flat on the tiles. This would of been the case if we didn't pay extra for the silver frame around the edges. Because of the frame the mirror has to sit on brackets. So now our mirrors have a 1 cm gap between the wall and the back of the mirror and it can be wobbled! Was very concerned at first but over it now. Best thing for us would of been to tile so that the tiles still go behind the edges of the mirror so you have the illusion that it is tiled behind. Then seal the uncovered wall to get rid of the dust issue. Then the clips could go on the wall (not tiles) so that the mirror brackets are recessed and the mirror sits against the tiles snuggly. Not sure if you would have a frame or not but which ever way I would make it look as though you have tiled behind and not sit the mirror on a tile edge. Re: ** Urgent Mirror/Bathroom Help please ** 9Dec 17, 2013 3:07 pm Oh Robbie55 I never thought of the contemporary 'ness' of a mirror, I just automatically said bevelled but I think the polished edge would be better in our house. FTR, we aren't tiling behind the mirrors in our house. Re: ** Urgent Mirror/Bathroom Help please ** 10Dec 22, 2013 9:13 am Hi guys, Thanks for all your input. Mirror is not yet installed, but after weighting it all up, we did decide to tile behind. There were a few reasons for this - one of them being the fact that we have a window that is hard up against the corner of where this mirror would have to go, so it was all a bit tricky as to how that might work (mirror would have to be slightly cut around at the base to to fit around the window frame - or leave a narrow gap that wouldn't be/couldn't be tiled - and I wasn't sure how that would all finish up). Secondly, and the main reason for our decision, was that this particular area in question forms part of the wall that is shared with my son's bedroom that I have been obsessing over in terms of insulating as best as possible to reduce the previous noise travelling between the two rooms. So tiling, and then putting the mirror on top gave me greater peace of mind that we have that extra sealed layer of 'sound barrier'. Mirror on top. We will make sure it is a mirror with a nice 'finished' edge. Under other circumstances, I probably would have gone recessed. KGsGirl Pick whichever look you prefer as you are the one who has to look at it every day! I hadn't seen enough of either to know which look I preferred - or to know if there was a general 'trend' in the way things are done. Hence why I asked. robbie55 Polished edge not beveled edge mirrors are more contemporary. We will get a straight edge (polished edge??) - not bevilled edge mirror. And not that it matters as much now that we are not having it recessed but we were going to use a 'good mob' to measure and fit the mirror and the shower screen. Might research less expensive options now that the mirror fit doesn't have to be as crucial. HHCIB Thank you @.
