Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 05, 2013 2:46 pm Our neighbour (immediately next door to our house) has agreed to let us purchase the cubby in his backyard. The previous owner built it directly on top of a small chest height shed structure. Our plan is to have the cubby itself sit flat on the ground, therefore we just remove the cubby from the shed base and voila. Problem is, according to the neighbour, that the way the cubby has been built means it is really difficult to diassemble. I don't know the ins and outs of it but the neighbour doesn't believe it is possible to just simply take it apart. The cubby can be unbolted from the shed base but that's it. The question is therefore how we get it to our house. The neighbour is suggesting we get a group of about ten people to lift the cubby over the fence. I see disaster written all over that and really don't want to put people in a position where they could get hurt. My dad (very knowledgeable about building) hasn't checked it out yet and I'm hoping he will see that yes the cubby can be taken apart easily enough. The layout of our properties mean a lifting vehicle of some sort would not be able to get to the back yard. And the neighbour doesn't want to temporarily change the fence by making a hole in it (even though my uncle is a fencer who can fix the fence the same day, heh!) In case you can't tell, I'm a complete hack. I have no idea if a cubby can be built in such a way as to make it impossible to take apart. My thinking is four walls, a base and a roof-- surely they can be taken apart! Re: Getting a cubby from the neighbours: not so simple! 4Dec 05, 2013 6:31 pm travelbug What , is it so cheap that it's worth the hassle??? Just buy one eleswhere. yes, it is cheap. Dirt cheap (a couple hundred dollars), in great condition as he has looked after it, and I'm looking at a minimum of $1200 for something similar in size. No, I won't buy one elsewhere-- wouldn't have posted my question if I was! Re: Getting a cubby from the neighbours: not so simple! 6Dec 06, 2013 8:48 am Just sold our cubby, which was built not to come apart. We built it 'like a house', so when I sold it, I highlighted the fact that it was going to have to go as one piece (minus the vernanda section which I could remove) and the person that bought it came with a truck with crane and a tandem trailer which it fit on. Luckily we had good access and he managed to lift it on. If you can't dismantle the cubby into pieces, sounds like you'll need to negotiate pulling some of the fence apart and enlisting some muscle or not buy it. Your difficult neighbour doesnt want the fence down, you cant get a truck with a hoist down the back....what does it all tell you? Its tells you .....Build your own, or go without. Re: Getting a cubby from the neighbours: not so simple! 8Dec 06, 2013 11:40 am What sort of fence do you have - colorbond ? If so - take out a panel. If you undertake to fix it immediately it seems odd he won't agree. Have you paid ? If not I'd make this part of the deal. Re: Getting a cubby from the neighbours: not so simple! 9Jan 12, 2014 7:44 pm Hi so sorry but I'm laughing my head off! Ok so about 10 years ago we sold our cubby to strangers from what used to be the trading post! Our housed backed onto council land and the buyers where able to park their car with trailer just on the other side of the fence. (A couple with two small children ,) the cubby like yours was in excellent condition and the buyers didn't want to dismantle, neither did we particularly. So we organised for 8strong friends to come over and lift this cubby over the fence, omg!!! It was the funniest thing you have ever seen it was like 8 three stooges! Looking back it was quite dangerous however we managed with a lot of grunting, swearing and yelling to get it up And over once it was balanced on the rather small trailer that the buyers had bought with them and tied down so as it would not move a inch.everyone was relieved and luckily no one hurt the buyers paid us the money and just as we all were saying goodbye the little girl about 4 years old says out loud , Oh mummy the CHICKENS are gunna love their new house You could have cut the air with a knife!!! Lol our friends still to this day have a laugh about the cubby over the fence , that was actually going to be a chicken coop! good luck lol Thanks. I called VBA today and they said it was a Consumer Affairs issue, the old handball. Seems like the government organisations don't want to do their job at the moment. 2 7555 it depends on the natural ground level, if they excavated their boundary wall needed to be built as a retaining wall.
