Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 12, 2008 3:39 pm We are considering adding a rumpus room to the back of our house, new ensuite, new main bathroom and new kitchen.
I am just after some ideas of what size your rumpus room is, the job is going to cost a whole lot more than we imagined, at the moment the rumpus will be 4mx7m. Do you think this will be big enough? We will lose the whole back wall of hte dining/kitchen and this will all open out to the new room so it will be very open. We really just want to put an 8 seater corner lounge in there, a TV with enough room for a coffee table, nice rug. We will have a study/sewing nook built out to the eaves on one side and big sliding doors opening to the outdoor area on the other side. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Andrea Re: Size of rumpus room? 2May 12, 2008 5:22 pm Do you have kids? Plan to?
if you can go wider than 4m then do it, a couch takes up a fair bit of room.... http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff126/Alan_Gill_house/h01.jpg We added 6x6 family room (or close to) bedroom 4x4, ensuite 2x2.3, WIR 2x1.6, laundry 2.1x2.4 and dunny. Considered bifold doors instead of sliding? May make your outdoor are seem bigger if it all opens up. Have a surf thruhere if you like. Sounds along the same lines as you're after. And yes, it will cost a fair amount of money, but consider what houses sell for the same size..and how much more enjoyable having the extra space will be. At least we did... We have decided to make the room 5x7 as the study/sewing nook will have to come into the room a little. We still do not have a definite price for the work. Two builders we have had out want us to pay a $500 fee before they will quote, and the third actually does quote without charging anything. It makes it really hard to choose a builder when you have to outlay money just to see how much it will cost. They did give us round a bout figures, but admitted that they couldn't really be sure. We should get our other quote back next week. We are hoping it will come in at a price we can afford (while being on one income). Your extension looks fantastic. Andrea Re: Size of rumpus room? 4Jun 19, 2008 9:24 am I had two small kids in a rumpus 5x7 for an entire Tasmanian winter (no yard at all in that house). It's a great size ! Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Size of rumpus room? 5Jun 19, 2008 7:35 pm We got our quote back today - $141,000 I am so sad. We were hoping for it to be about $110 - 120 000, as we still need to fence, and do our entertainment area.
We are going to look at reducing the size of the room somehow to save some money, and hope that when he typed extend the ensuite by 4.5m he quoted at that and not the 1.5 m we asked for That will make some difference. I am just so disappointed, we only paid $200 000 for the house. Anyway will keep trying. I know we are adding a lot, but I really didn't expect it to be that much. Maybe we just need to wait a few years. Andrea From the information posted it looks to me your rumpus room is nothing more than extended garage. That will present a number of challenges.
