Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 07, 2013 1:15 pm Good afternoon folks So.... we started to paint our house, got to the side wall and realised we need to replace our laundry window (well, we always knew we had to do that but had been delaying actually doing it!). So we got someone around to quote to replace the window, and in the process they have suggested the option of putting in a door instead of a window. We like the 'idea' of this, however it is throwing all sorts of spanners into the works - including it altering our outside requirements etc. Everything on the outside could possibly be worked around, but we first need to decide if having a door in this location is 'do-able' given the space restraints. See image below... So it would be an entry via our laundry. I like the idea of this in order to have an entry that we (and the kids) can come through and onto tiled area rather than my floorboards at front and rear entrance. Also, given our BBQ area will be a bit further down on this side, it also gives access to our kitchen via the laundry. But.... space is totally limited. The gap between edge of bench top and cupboards opposite is 760mm. As our handyman pointed out - our bathroom door width is only 700mm. So actual walkthrough door space is enough I suppose, but am concerned about how the framework/jams (sp) etc for door will work with the space. And then the laundry itself is a very tight squeeze in general - not much room to move. If one person was in the laundry, you would have to move out of the way if someone was trying to come in/out through the door. But... it's not like anyone 'hangs out' in the laundry so might not be too much of an issue. We have only just had the laundry installed so altering any of that is not an option. Further - the door would have to open out, which as our handyman has pointed out - technically it should go inwards. Is having an external door opening outwards (in this situation) workable? Or is there any reason why I should avoid it all costs? Door handle placement might even be an issue. As I said earlier, it also means we would need to have a reasonable landing (deck) area outside of the door to allow enough room to manouvre around whilst opening/closing the door. That is not a problem - apart from it kind of interfering with other plans I was starting to formulate in my mind for that area. We are starting to come full circle and head back to the original idea of just replacing the window ( ) but want to make sure we aren't missing a great opportunity to put the door in - and apart from the "extras" of building a landing outside and a few other bits and pieces - price difference between door and window is only $200 difference. Any thoughts or points I should consider with this? Cheers HHCIB Re: Will a door here work?? 2Nov 07, 2013 4:25 pm Traditionally doors in Australia open inwards but that's not the same for every country. In Sweden most doors seem to open outwards. (I understand that for public buildings the Swedish law requires them to open outwards) The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Will a door here work?? 3Nov 07, 2013 4:42 pm Thanks Bashworth..... was hoping you would pop in (nearly PM'd you directly but didn't want to impose ). So door opening outwards not so much an issue.... what about actual width/space - do you think it is workable - or too tight?? Cheers again... HHCIB Re: Will a door here work?? 4Nov 07, 2013 7:47 pm It is a very narrow door, much narrower than I would use if planning from scratch. But you are OK with the laundry width and if you think a door is going to be useful then why not? The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Will a door here work?? 5Nov 07, 2013 11:06 pm Could you put a sliding door in? We had one at the end of our laundry. We have come full circle and decided to stick with just replacing the window. Having a door was going to be too much extra/unplanned for mucking around on the outside allowing for the entrance etc. Down the track if we think it might warrant a door (and if we have found somewhere else to locate the contents of one of our laundry cabinets so that we could make the opening wider and create some actual room to enter into), then we might replace with a door. But for now, a window will suffice. Cheers HHCIB Block of two storey townhouses requires painting on the roof. A brick parapet wall separates each unit and extends above the tiled roof.
