Having said that I do love all the hallways that they had photos of. The thing that those halls had in common was that they are quite wide. Our hall at the narrowest will be 1300 wide. Sandra Re: Are hallways a waste of space in a house design? 22Sep 16, 2013 11:57 am Yeah I agree completely Sandra. I've been to quite a few houses - both old and newish where they had narrow halls and they were like walking into a tunnel. Our main hall downstairs is going to be about 1900mm but at one point the first two stair treads intrude about 450mm so I didn't want it any narrower there. I think it depends a lot on how much light shines onto them as well. If it was dark then you should widen them a bit to create the illusion of them being more spacious. Stewie Re: Are hallways a waste of space in a house design? 23Sep 18, 2013 10:05 am Seems strange to me this idea that hallways are a waste of space and should be avoided, but if you MUST have them to make them really wide... I wouldn't have though width makes a good hallway but more positioning and layout of openings, windows etc. Also find it odd to have lots of windows to the outside along a hallway because surely that means an actual room has missed out on those windows? Hmmm... (Our hallway isn't perfect by any stretch. I would have loved it 10-20cm wider and those high openable windows stretching along the roof.) It looks awfully similar to a Henley Monterey. I'm in the process of trying to design a house that is loosely based on the Monterey but I can't copy it for copyright reasons and because I pulled out of their contract they will prob watch me like a hawk! I love the hallway joining all the rooms and am struggling to get 4bed, study, theatre into a 30sq plan. It's a plantation home - retreat nouveau with an added room and powder room and many small changes. Plantation I believe is the same company as Henley, just for Queensland. That's an interesting copyright issue you have there. Didn't realise they could copyright a house layout! Look at all the plantation designs, there may be something similar you could base your design on there....? Closing off the hallway if practical, allows you to heat or cool the main levels easier and a lot cheaper because the volume of air is drastically reduced. That's what we're doing with our new house build, putting a door at the start of the hallway that leads to 2 bedrooms, bathroom, toilet, laundry and garage (although that one will always be closed anyway). Yes, there's an extra door to open/close each time you go to the dunny, but it will save on heating/cooling costs over the life of the house. I know it might seem a bit odd adding a door to a open plan style house sounds counter intuitive. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld.
