Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 06, 2013 1:24 pm Hi people, I am sure anybody who has already built /about to build a double story, would know the impact of staircase on the over all impression of the house. After all that's the first part of the house that gets noticed/judged as soon as you enter the house and then the kitchen(because of most floor plans that I have seen have staircases closer to the entry than the kitchen ). Thought it would be interesting to see pictures of what staircases people have choosen and what $$$ spent on them(only if you don't mind to share) and how you like them if you started living your house already. Anything about that which you now regret / wish you have done that any other way? For example some safety concern which you didn't think of before? Looking forward to see all those beautiful staircases ... Re: Show us your staircase ??? 2Sep 06, 2013 2:49 pm My stairs are not the first thing you see as you enter my house, as they don't face the front door (which I like). They are tucked away in the dining room off the hall way. They are partly painted white with a stained handrail (white would have shown all the kids sticky finger marks and chips/bashes) and carpeted. There are black metal balusters with 5 decorative infills. They are also curved with a landing half way which I love for ease of vacuuming, but really tricky to get large pieces of furniture up! A storage cupboard underneath is essential. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We could have had square stairs for our house design instead of the curved wall, but we really liked the feature of the curved wall, and it isn't an issue in the rooms it adjoins. I can't remember if we paid extra for any features (such as the decorative infills) or whether there were several different styles to choose from all inclusive in the house design. An important thing to remember if you are having carpeted stairs is to put a power point (or ducted vac outlet) as close as you can get to them for ease of vacuuming. I love mine! They're a great feature of our house, yet not too prominent being tucked away, and I love that I can rest the Dyson half way up on the wide landing to vac the upper part. Painting the ceiling on the top storey from the stairs will be an issue when the time comes, and we have a wall light, not a pendant, so we can easily change the globes when they blow ! No safety concerns with ours. If you fall from the top you'll hit a wall half way down to break your fall, so you won't go down the whole flight! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! It was quite a significant upgrade, as it was in the display home, my husband fell in love with it. There is a big void above the stairs, which has a David Trubridge pendant that hangs there. I had hoped that it would add a little wow, it's not the first thing you see when you walk into the house, but as you walk past it, it definitely makes a statement, and of an evening with the light on it really stands out. I am glad that we spent the money we did, I don't think standard stairs would have suited us. With the timber, I can either sweep them or vacuum them, I wipe them down with a damp cloth and they will eventually need a touch up with stain as they age, but that's no big drama. And Stormy , I'd imagine it must have been a pain moving furniture up via those stairs. But yah we dont do that every day!!! Also Smorgzz, even though that's not relevant for this discussion can I see a picture of your stairs with that pendent light , if that's ok? I am a bit obsessed with interiors , even though I still have plenty of time. Trying gt some inspirations around lighting decorations etc. Look forward to see many more beautiful stair cases? Also Jen, on a side note - I just left a comment on your blog - was wondering if your tiles "super white" are they porcelain? We took the main floor tiling and carpets out as the laying charge for 120m2 of 600x600 would have been $12,000 plus the cost of the tiles would have been over our allowance as I doubt we would have gotten them as cheap through the tiling company the builder uses.
