Getting rid of semi-functioning whitegoods

We have a dryer and a washing machine that only kind of work (e.g. the washing machine can only do parts of a cycle). Is there any way of getting rid of these for free?
Scrap metal merchants will probably take these for free.
Try Gumtree or even Ziilch which is a website dedicated for free stuff.
Put it out the front of your place with a $50 price tag on it... it will be stolen within hours..
However put it there with a "free" sign on it.. it'll sit there for weeks
