Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 05, 2008 9:03 pm I have just bought a house and am in the midst of renovating. The air vents on the walls have plastic coverings which are yellow with age. I was considering replacing them but have since heard that they are no longer a requirement in homes and have not been for the last 30 years. I am now considering plastering over them but wanted confirmation that they are definitely not necessary before I do so. I am aware that they are necessary if we use an unflued gas heater, which we currently do but are replacing with a coonara very soon. Is there any other reason why they may be necessary? My reason for covering them over is to conserve heat in our home. Re: Air Vents 2May 05, 2008 9:28 pm Post a pic, the yellow covering ? Are they something others have put on them to block them?
The vents can be useful in summer to actually assist with airflow through the house while the winodws are shut - but yes they do loose lots of warmth in winter and my undertanding is they are installed for gas lighting and unflued gas heating exhaust gas escape. Personally I'd be covering them with a temporary option that you can easily remove if desired. Steve Re: Air Vents 3May 05, 2008 9:44 pm I have attached a picture. They don't block the air. I think that they are just the original vent coverings from when the house was built. If I were to replace them I was considering installing the type that look like slits in the wall as the plastics ones are a pain to clean.

my cousin recently renovated her home, and was told by a building supervisor that these are totally out dated now, especially as all homes are star rated now. They let the hot air in at summer, and let the cool air in at winter. you might want to consult with the building commission, they are always happy to help. Good luck with the renos. retail its around double the price of a similar sized actron/dakin system from memory, They are excellent systems though. But with how builder gouge on AC/heating, you… 4 13789 How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5944 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house. Does this placement sound reasonable to you? Also, I plan to have 6 zones I think. Living room… 0 0 |
