Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 03, 2008 9:51 pm Hello,
I was curious about the pros and cons of rendering the exterior of my new home which is yet to be built. What happens if there is a crack? How would I mend this? Do I need to paint the render after a period of time? Please give me your feedback. Re: Rendering the exterior of my new home 3May 04, 2008 10:19 am My wife desperately wants to render the front of our house *when* it is built, so I hope that it is easy enough to do it completely solo. We were quoted around $75 sq m, mind you thats only one quote, we haven't delved too far into it yet. So I will be most interested in what people say Paul Re: Rendering the exterior of my new home 5May 07, 2008 7:54 pm that's a good idea, we want to do out house in the future also, unfortunatlely the previous owners painted the house white so we have to get that off and then do the rendering, i have priced the stuff up at bunnings to do it myself, i would be alot from the hip pocket and also the elbow grease to match would be easier to get some one in!!!! - but that is a long way off for the minute!!! I would get advice from a professional renderer for this! Trust me, if not done properly you could have a house with more lines and cracks in it than a road map! Get some quotes, and then milk them for some info while they are there. Fair enough if you were going to try rendering a feature wall in the backyard but your front facade...??? You can pick ******* render a mile off - it looks lumpy in sunlight. I would highly recommend getting a professional. Re: Rendering the exterior of my new home 8May 12, 2008 3:05 pm IMO, if I was building the house I would leave it brick. It's so maintence free and IMO, looks better. Depending on the product, the render should hold together for hairline crack as it is somewhat flexible, but bigger cracks will stand out and are very hard to patch without redoing the whole wall. Not that a new house should get any cracks this big. I would plan to paint it every 10yrs.
In saying this, I've rendered my house, but its a 30yr old house with grey besser bricks, so I see it as an improvement. Patchie - If the paint is sound, you can get a render that goes straight over. http://www.quikcote.com.au/Quikcote_Flexipatch.pdf Though I've never used this particular one, but I think its about $30 a bag.
