Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 08, 2013 11:28 pm Forgive the silly title. Our builder has asked us to sign a variation to drop the highlight window in our home theatre room. We'd asked for the window to be made as small and high as possible from the original design. It ended up being 6c tall. The plans show the head height to be 28c but 25c on the elevations. The builder wants us to have the head height at 25c as per elevations (presumably to line up with the head height of all the other door/windows). We have 31c ceilings & the window is on the side of the house so having all the windows at the same head height isn't important. 25c means the bottom of the window would be at 19c (around 1.6m), This seems too low to us, it's supposed to be a highlight. Does the head height have to be that low? or should we stick to our original idea and insist on 28C? Re: How high is too low for a highlight window? 2Aug 09, 2013 1:55 am I've got no idea if this will help at all...needs a lot of imagination! Might help just looking at something though? This is our theatre, like you we wanted a 6c highlight window but apparently the smallest we were allowed in the end was 12c so thats what we got! Our ceiling is 28c with a 31c recess which you should be able to see the top of to see where a 31c ceiling would be. The top of our window is at 25c and bottom at 13c The red box would be the top of your window at 28c and the blue box at 25c. http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u403/xxkat86xx/theatre_zpsde6c5c73.jpg Another window we have is a 6c highlight window out the front with the top at 25c and bottom at 19c like yours http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u403/xxkat86xx/2013-08-08153136_zps1111dfe8.jpg Considering your theatre is closed off from all of the other rooms I would probably go for the 28c option if it was available but if you had to go for the 25c it would still look normal 22c for the bottom would be 1900mm ish high 19c for the bottom would be 1650mm ish high I can't really see out of our 6c highlight window out the front but I guess it all depends on how tall you are Will the type of blinds/curtains you want help you make a decision? Re: How high is too low for a highlight window? 3Aug 09, 2013 8:18 am Thanks kat. You're a star! Your 6c window doesn't look too bad but we were both wanting HIgh. Neither of us is tall but we could both see out of the window at 19c. We were thinking plantation shutters which, I think, look fine at any height. Having said that, you do not HAVE to have them that low. 2400mm is just as acceptable as a head height for a window, and is often used for highlights and taller doors/windows. If at the end of the day you don't mind having 1 window higher than the rest, go for 2400 high. It's your home and you will be the ones using the highlight, not the builder or your neighbours Mark Re: How high is too low for a highlight window? 5Aug 09, 2013 9:46 am Are you being asked to drop it cause the eaves on outside are 25c? If so then you wont have option of it being 28c. Otherwise get it the way you want it not the builders. I think with 31c its prob going to look bit low This is mine 19c-25c (same size as yours). Except my ceiling is 28c in that room (sorry still in construction and only photo I have) Re: How high is too low for a highlight window? 6Aug 09, 2013 7:05 pm Thanks Mark & Leanne. We're not too bothered about the difference in height between this one and the rest on that side of the house. No-one is going to see it. Because we've got the 31c ceilings the height isn't an issue either. I got in touch with our pre-start consultant and and explained our thoughts. Unsurprisingly, she sorted everything out in a matter of minutes. We now have a highlight window with head height of 28c. Thanks! I'm spoke to the builder I'm not sure if this is all true but basically went along the lines of they considered all options and if I was to compact and fill it… 2 6359 It will be neat but you won't have much freeboard. At least they are not weep holes. Are you in a high intensity rainfall region? The regulatory slope is only required… 3 8195 4 6168 |
